TD5 10p vs 15p Head Issues and Options

    Hi all,

Picked up a clean 00 Discovery with 212,000km as a project 4x4 to make it into a tourer for a around Australia trip. I got this Disco cheap due to a cylinder head issue, turns out the head is bent and cracked after removal.

The block looks very good with the cross hatch honing marks still in the block which leaves me in between decisions to go a complete new reco engine 15 or 16p or repair and upgrade the 10p with AMC 10p Head or a 15p Head.

After research i found that 10p head suffered from plastic dowels which can be replaced with steel units and oil drive failures(not sure on this fix). My questions is, is the 15/16p heads the same as 10p, but only the plastic/metal dowels is the difference from being faulty? Or is the 15p LR thicker and sturdier? And is the 10P AMC head sturdy as strong as the 15Ps etc...

I also understand the difference of the 1 or 2 hole for the fuel regulator and to use the 15p head it requires the 15p injectors, fuel regulator and ecu recoding, and/or weld up 1 hole and use the 10p regulator.

With the extra cost of injectors etc i am also consider buying a complete 15/16p engine and reconditioning it.

I have issues trying to find a early head (10p) but can get a new AMC late model head for 2100aud with valves.

I will also b lightly porting/polishing the head, adding a EGR bypass, Larger intercooler, free flow exhaust, K&N or similar air filter, remapped ecu or programmable Haltech type system and most likely a bigger turbo along the way (turbo selection still under research) and would like to make the head/block bullet proof.

I would like the engine to be strong to pull a fully loaded 4x4 and camper trailer that will be towed up beaches etc and to turn the larger 265/75/16 Maxxi tyres with the ARB diff lockers and 3inch lift kit. We hope to get in the 220hp area around 40% more torque.

Any suggestions and help is greatly appreciated.

    Hi Disco Tourer,

I have a good 2001 head and I'm in Margaret River. It's still on the engine in my spare D2, it has done only exactly 200K. I need the bottom end but not the head as I already have an AMC Turner one on my D2. If your interested send me a PM.

    Nick

Sounds like a machine, you might not need to use a custom ECU. Talk to TD5 Inside (I think they can do 180BHP with the correct mods). But i'd say if you are looking for that much go it might be worth going with the later motor as the fuel pressure is greater and will probably help what you are trying to achieve. Not to mention the timing chain was upgraded from single to double chain somewhere. But if you were going to rebuild it that is also an upgrade you would make. The AMC head is also worth considering as is the VNT turbo setup TD5 Inside are selling.

I recently rebuilt my 15P using over sized pistons from Turner and cannot complain about the service or quality.
