Any clue where this might have fallen off?

Just found it in my drive. I've just had the PAS pump, water pump and aux bracket off. All bolts are present as far as I can see.

12mm head, roughly 24mm long (end to end). Has evidence of oil on the end of the threaded bit.

    I don't recall using 12mm, but...

    2002 Discovery II TD5.

    Anyone?

Best I can suggest is a mirror and a good light. Use the mirror to look from angles you can't get at without it, you might even have to shine the light at the mirror to light up some of the areas.
Is there a possibility that it was just lodged somewhere on the motor, lost and replaced before, and just been jiggled loose with you working on the vehicle?

    Cheers

My bet is what nismine01 suggests, The only 12mm headed bolts in that area are the aux mounting as far as I know. I reckon some1 has dropped it and it has gone down under the aircon compr against the block. Been there done that

Thanks guys. Here's hoping! It could be off my wife's car, or even thrown up off the road about 2 meters away.

We're heading down to Bald Rock NP in the morning. Likely to find every man and his dog beat us there! ;-)

Not saying that they don't exist, but I have never seen a 12 mm headed bolt on a LR.

Is the wife's car Asian. 12mm was common on Asian cars.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

My first thought was exactly that, but I'm not that experienced in the "deeper" mechanical areas of the Disco. 8mm, 10mm and 13mm seem to be the sizes I've encountered for the most part.

My wife's car is a Ford Focus, but I think it was one of the South African built ones. I better take a peek under hers! :-o

    Hi Wil2k,

It is just possible that the bolt you found did not come from either of your cars. It could have been picked up anywhere on the road (or at a service station?) by your tyre tread, and been transported to your home before falling out.

Had it been a nail or a screw in this circumstance, you might well have had a flat tyre to deal with on the road. But being a bolt, that's much less likely.

I have seen black bolts like the one you show on many Japanese cars, but not on a Land Rover (quite apart from the 12mm size).

    Just a thought.

Well we did 750 kms after this post. No (new) leaks, no rattles, no catastrophic failures. Guess it wasn't mine after all! Any clue where this might have fallen off?

Thanks guys, for being an extra set of eyes. Much appreciated.

...although my passenger tail lights fell out of the bumper and melted a bit somewhere just before Warwick. The bits of black plastic in my driveway... Well... We know where they came from. Any clue where this might have fallen off?
