Corrosion X on ECU and BCU boards

    Hi all,

Got serious about protecting the 14 year old boards. This stuff is brilliant. Not to be confused with Corrosion X HD.

There are videos of those little RC helicopters flying under salt water after being sprayed with CX.

That product is not dedicated for electronics IMO, it's what is written on it just ''safe on electronics'', if you want something really good for that and have some patience untill it arrives that's the best i've ever used Nanoprotech Automobile Electric | eBay . treated all the ECUs, fuseboxes and exposed connectors with it after an ''agressive'' wading when all the warnings were on and everything came back to normal over night and didnt happen again on the next ''adventure''

Thanks mate. Certainly a lot cheaper than Corrosion X. I had a handheld UHF that got salt water in it and shorted. Dried it out but wouldnt turn on. Soaked it in Corrosion X (the boards that is) and after 2 hours it worked like a bought one....very impressive. Use it in all my fishing reels also. Inside key pads etc. Doesnt strip insultation...a mate of mine killed his outboard over many years. ...kept spraying the wiring with WD40. You would have come across Corrosion X in aviation circles Sierra.

You got me thinking, so I looked up about what happened to stuff developed where I used to work.
They span it out into a company, P2i, which I think is selling out to others to make into products.

I'm thinking about contacting these guys, Impervious, who I think are using the Dstl developed stuff.

What I'm wondering about is how to get coverage under components, i.e. encourage creep. Reading around they actually use a vacuum chamber and plasma to put a 1 micron coating, the plasma presumably dispersing as a gas and so getting into every area.

Ideally, for application to pre-existing boards, I guess you might want a bath of the stuff and get a bit of vibration to encourage full coverage.

Having said all that, I'm wondering if the spray as shown would be enough in the majority of cases and perhaps just a bit of extra application around components where you want to protect all sides (e.g. the microprocessor).

This would have the great side effect of both protecting from corrosion but also full water proofing. You could stop worrying about the Auto, Body and Engine ECUs being immersed, they'd be both safe and keep going. The next issue would be the throttle pedal, which you can't use this on, you'd have to physically move it.

I might drop P2i and Impervious a line and see what I can find out, if I do I'll put an update here.

Why don't auto drivers do the XYZ switch in Corrosion X?

I don't think it would help a lot where you have "wiper" type contacts as in most of the xyz switches and the accelorater.
