Question ATF: Castrol Transmax Z vs Penrite ATF FS

Anyone compared Castrol Transmax Z < Castrol Transmax Z | Castrol Australia | Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) - Truck & Bus Products | Castrol Australia | Truck & Bus - Motor Oil & Lubricants | Castrol Australia | Products | Castrol Australia | Castrol - Motor Oil, Engine Oil, Synthe > to Penrite ATF FS < https://www.penriteoil.com.au/produc...d_products=336 >?

There were a few threads a while ago where members were talking about Transmax Z no longer being available and trying the Penrite instead. I noticed today that both are available at Repco but the Penrite is less than 2/3 of the price of Castrol. The Penrite fluid also meets a lot of other Industry Specifications and is compatible with our Ford Ranger too (Transmax is not).

The Typical Data for Penrite compared to the Castrol Product Data Sheet < http://msdspds.castrol.com/bpglis/FusionPDS.nsf/Files/5318889C4CDA883380257C990001D228/$File/BPXE-9H7QZ8.pdf > the figures are fairly close (I don't know what they actually mean though), except for Viscosity, Brookfield at -40?C which Penrite is almost 1.5x higher (don't know if this is good, bad or indifferent though).

Anyone who has moved from the Castrol to the Penrite fluid about to comment if anything was noticed?

I think either meets the specs regarding the ZF box. Am running Transmax Z in mine and seems ok. Looking at them the penrite is a newer formulation so covers more of the newer boxes ie the Rangers. Transmax is getting quite old now re its specs, which does not mean it is any less suitable for what it does. Either will do the job in D2 autos. with the penrite also covering your Ranger(less bottles in the cupboard )

The difference is that Transmax Z is approved by ZF for use in the 4HP22EH and appears on their approval list. You can find it by googling the ZF site.

Another oil that seems about the same as Transmax Z is Redline D4 ATF, but I have stuck with Transmax Z.

I guess my attitude is that you buy 4 litres every say 40KK so 10 bucks difference is not much, and I don't have a lot of money.

I think it was around $90.00 vs about $57.00.

I don't have the opposite experience yet, but my experience with the penrite so far:
1st box had it put in as an attempt to cure some problems, it didn't but that's a long story, the important bit is that most of this was lost before I solved a latent issue and it was some bog standard ATF being used with full pressure in the old box. Shift was OK, problems related to box internals.

New Ashcroft box and I've used the penrite FS ATF in it since install. Cold shift is fine, but once warm, and I believe it's the gearbox oil warmed, the shift is HARSH on both up and down. Now I may have the wrong level (too much, too little), I've got a dipstick fitted and I'm not 100% certain on the correct level.

I've done about 5k I guess since fit, and I was going to do a quick change, one to get rid of any gash from the recon box and two to allow me to refill with a known 4.5L and see the level on the dipstick.
I have enough penrite left to do that, but I have a feeling that the temperature viscosity rating might be wrong for the box, next change should tell.

Why not just use the proper method to check your fluid level? Undo the fill plug with the vehicle running...

yea, but the plug way will give you the correct level,,
then you can mark your dipstick,, yes?
    no more uncertainties...

unless your saying the new dipstick fits into the outlet plug,,,,,, ?
