    Td5 rear cam plug seal

Has anyone replaced the rear plug seal. I have replaced the front o-ring a few times but now I feel the rear plug is leaking. Do you bend a screwdriver? Do you jam it between the steel and the seal? And tips before I tackle it much appreciated

First make sure it is that which is leaking and not the rear of the Rocker Gasket which is a common source. If you are sure I think it best to get a set of seal removal tools from Super Cheep or the like, then you should have a sharp tool that you can manipulate in that space. Do not prize it out between the seal and the head. There is a soft centre in the seal where the sharp point of the tool will penetrate easily and you should be able to lever it out. I have never done one in situ so good luck I hope this helps.

Its particularly difficult to work behind there, as already mentioned using a tool to penetrate the center of the seal and pry it out, and dont try to work your tool between the seal and the head or the surface edge of the head will get damaged.

It really is not a spot that is prone to leaking, ive not done one for years.

    Common leaks:
*Cam cover seal, the half moon at rear, always install this gasket clean, dry and free of any sealant, oil, torque cam cover bolts.
*Front plastic cam cover, the o-ring wears out, I replace them with a Viton seal and again make sure the plastic cover, head is clean and free of oil and sealant.
*Oil feed pipes to alternator (feeds the vacuum pump on front of alt).
    *Engine rear main seal.
*Ensure its not a diesel "leak", fuel pressure regulator is prone to leaking.
    *Leaking engine sump gasket.

All of which will end up showing as a "leak" round the bottom of the bell housing.

Poked around tonight with a mirror. It appears to be leaking from the rocker cover gasket at the half moon shaped bit. Enclosed photo you can see a 'clean' patch where I believe the oil has been running down. What sealant do people suggest? Should I replace the gasket? It's about 2 years since I replaced it when I did the injector lume

Yep , replace the gasket , the rocker cover itself looks like its leaking from those cracks, may be worth cleaning it when its off to do the gasket, blocking the breather, turn upsidedown and fill with petrol to see if it leaks
