Where on the head is the coolant leak coming from ?

Hi, it seems that my mate's td5 head has failed, coolant leak. Is this a reason to throw the car away or is there some way of setting it right without breaking the bank? We think a replacement head assy is about $3K which is a bit out of reach right now.
Is it possible to get a head off a running td5 and just pop it on or is in not that simple? (my last effort was with a 186, which worked out ok, but I think I am out of my depth with the td5!) Maybe a whole engine swap is better?
Thanks in advance aulroers

I'm told cylinder compression is getting into the cooling system. The car runs but really heats up if there's much load on it. It's an auto trans if that makes any difference...

Pull the head and inspect before condemning the whole vehicle. A normal head gasket replacement runs into about $2300 however if a new head is required then yes it could be a 50 50 decision whether to repair or not considering it could run to 6 to 7k depending on reco or new outright head.

How many k's has it done would also be useful?
The first engine rebuild I did was on a VK Carby Black motor. The 2nd was a TD5. Don't be intimidated the theory is basically the same. Everything must be clean and flat, everything tightened to spec. Correct tools are essential though.
The problem you have is likely a head gasket. It is not uncommon on the TD5, the head maybe OK. I think if you can replace a head on a 186 then you will not have an issue with the TD5. Just don't cut corners.
It does, however, help if you have fingers like snakes, and an eyeball on the end of each one!!
As mentioned previously, could just be the plastic locating dowels......
There are a few other fairly low cost things that may be well worth doing, or way easier when head is off - fuel cooler o-rings, water pump, oil filters, check timing chain and guides, injector harness, .....
Its gone over 300k. Looks like it might be parked up for a while due to other priorities and projects.
