Fuel tank very slow to fill

    Hi Guys

TD5 D2 - Filling up is a chore - never used to be - but something has blocked or done something a bit weird..

When filling up with a jerry can the filler neck is backed up to nearly the top.

Have put injector cleaner down the breather (lhs hole just down from the filler) this flowed in fine as did 2 litres of diesel to see if it flowed ok.

Are there any other valves / floats / areas that could block?

    Thanks

    Steve

There is a breather off the top of the tank, it's been a while since I had my D2 but from memory the breather hose runs back up to the filler pipe .
My guess is this has blocked or kinked and your not getting the air escaping the tank making the filler bank up.

I think if you have a look up the inside of the guard where the filler is you will see the breather hose.

    Hi Ean

thats the pipe I have flowed injector cleaner and diesel down - using a funnel and small bore pipe - flows freely.. unfortunately... at least that would be an answer!

    Steve.
Back when I had my D2 it all depended on the fuel,ie what addatives were in it.The diesel that foams is real bad news if you want to fill a D2 in a hurry.
Try a hi-flow pump,I found trickling diesel through them was quicker.

    Thanks Andy

We only fill at one servo which foams bad - the deefer is a nightmare but I have got used to it as it always has been - the disco has never been an issue - it just sucks it up! well - it did.. now its really bad - like I say a jerry can can overflow it.. so we don't stand a chance at the pump.. maybe I need to jam a highflow in there and see if I can blow it out

In your case I would undo the main filler pipe under the car and see what is lodged in there. A length of heater hose or similar shoved through each way would find a blockage quick smart. I've only seen D2 petrol tanks inside, not diesel, not sure if there are any one way flaps in the tank end of the filler plumbing.

From memory there is a rubber hose just where the filler pipe ends and the tank nipple meets. Run the car low - not out - on fuel and loosen the clamps and see if you can slip the hose far enough to see if something is blocking it.

I will look rave when I get home tonight cause I can't remember if there are 2 breathers on the Deisel tank or just 1 .

Yeah, like the previous poster said, can you shove a garden hose down and see if it goes all the way?
If its not something blocking it, I wonder if algae is growing in your tank.
Is your fuel filter full of crud?
    Just a thought...

    5teve ,

Just had a look at RAVE , and it shows that there is air vent which is connected to the filler , which is the thing you flowed the injector cleaner down and said it was clear. There is also breather pipe but RAVE states that has more to do with the inertia switch under the bonnet and is not real clear where it goes to from the tank.

I would try the hose down the filler and see if there is a blockage there.

    Thanks Guys

I may just remove the filler and breather pipes off the filler neck and see if I can have a nosey down them.

It looks like the hoses have never been touched as the original clips are on them.. so will have to get the mini grinder out..
