    TD5 replacing fan belt

I'm trying to stop a squeak which could be the exhaust manifold. I've taken the fan cowel off and seen that the fan belt has lots and lots of cracks in the pointy sections of the belt. I'm off to MLR to get a new fan belt, A/C no ACE.
Are there any traps for the unwary?
Does belt have to go on one way only? I know that the teeth in the pulleys and belt have to engage, but does it go clockwise or anticlockwise.
Maybe it says so on the belt.

    Thanks

    Julian

I don't think clockwise etc matters the first time you put the belt on.

Take a photo of the arrangement before you take it off. I always forget and take about 10-15 minutes to figure it out .

Give all your idler pulleys the spin test with the belt off.

The conventional wisdom says yo should always put it on the same way after subsequent removal.

    Gotta love MLR!

I asked if the was a discount for Land Rover Club members. Got told I'd be looked after. RRP is $47.07, cost me $40.00 Happy with that.

Yes, I will check the pulleys for smoothness.

    many minutes later.

    All pulleys spin smoothly.
If only I could get the new belt on. I need one hand for the tensioner and two to fit the belt!!

    Hi Julian,
I'm not sure if you have taken the fan off, if you haven't it is much easier with the fan off. For the time it takes in the luxury of your own driveway, unscrews anti-clockwise. I usually put a bit of anti seize on the thread when I put the fan back on, makes life easier in the longer term.

while the fan & belt is off, have a feel of the shaft the fan runs on, the bearing for the shaft can get dry & noisy, may need replacing...

Oh yea feel that joy especially if the bearing is worn in the housing and you have to replace "the housing. Been there done that........... maybe just put the belt back on.... Ignorance is bliss"

I did remove the fan, worth the $90.00 I spent on the spanners. I checked all the bearings, the harmonic balancer had no movement at all, which is as expected.
Bonus point. I had a squeak on engine shut down that indicated a harmonic balancer on the way out. This has gone.

A fabric non rubber top coating on the smooth side eliminates the squeak on shutdown.
The original contitech belt I had had this feature.
The rubber belt skids (squeaks) on the smooth pulleys when the engine stops dead.

Make sure you have the fan belt on the bottom pulley correctly - It has an extra groove in it compared to the other pulleys - if not in the correct groove the belt will not last very long.
