    D2 ront prop shafts

    Hi Guys,
New member here. I have read and used the information on the forum a few times to fix various things but this question is as far as I can find unanswered.

There are 2 different front prop shaft models listed for a D2 series 2 automatic TD5 model.
Mine is the later model that requires the 'harder to get hold of' part that sells for twice as much as the more generic one.

My front cardan joint has exploded luckily without other damage so I need to replace the shaft.
What is the difference between models listed? My attachment at the transfer case end is not damaged so is there is a way to frankenstein the earlier model shaft to my transfer case? I assume that is the difference, unless somebody else knows otherwise? Maybe the other one just fits?

Can't find a wreck or anything locally to compare parts so please help if you know the ins and outs.

    Any information is appreciated.

I'm sure I've already looked into it, but is it expensive to get a part sent to u from elsewhere?

I've literally fitted dozens of these to customers Discovery 2's (I also use them on Defenders with a flange change on the transfer case) I'd have to say just about dam near bullet proof.

I took my shaft to a local driveshaft rebuilder and had it rebuilt several years ago - still going strong, and was less than purchasing a new one.
I am sure their would be a place locally that would rebuild it for you.

While Im sure some have had a long lasting reliable "rebuilt" prop shaft, from where I sit, its hit and miss if they do it right, I've seen way too many supposedly rebuilt ones fail...

Pic below is of a "rebuilt" prop shaft (that failed) and a shiny new one from British Parts of Utah.

By all means, if there is an Australian made new heavy duty front prop shaft, please share the info.

AFAIK and unless someone contradicts me, the only difference in the driveshafts is that the later one has a "better" arrangement for the spline than the earlier one., involving ball bearings in the spline area, and non greasable as it doesn't have a grease nipple or plug.
    AFAIK both are interchangeable.
My 2002 has the later driveshaft . I don't know when they changed.

I would think you could have yours repaired with a new yoke if the diff end yoke is damaged from the exploding uni.

OK cool, so either part will fit then?

    That is good news.....

The 'welded to the shaft' side of the cardan joint was damaged so a replacemet shaft is in order I reckon.

Will have a look around for a D2 wreck in town, either V8 or TD5 should be a fit, right?
