    Need some advice

My D2 has 398,000 Kms on the clock. I have a humming noise from what I believe is the gearbox. This is what Ashcroft say

    Heavy Duty Rear Support Bearings
One of the common failure modes of the R380 is premature wear of one or both of the rear support bearings in the rear 5th speed aluminium housing, this starts as a whirring in all gears but not so bad in 4th, then as the bearings wear it allows the 5th gear on the layshaft and 5th gear on the mainshaft to come a little out of mesh, then 5th also gets noisy and often results in the teeth coming of one or both of the 5th gears, after much design work we are now able to offer to upgrade these two bearings.

I am in the position I can deal with this, but any other problem , I don't have the bank to cope. I love my vehicle, but with these K's, am I being foolish to think about spending on this gearbox problem, at these K's/
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

    Bob.
The best advice I can offer is put it in the D2 area.
We will more than likely shove it there.

get another gearbox .... check it's bearing .. if it's ok, throw it in. Were not talking a lot of money. You can always fix the one you have removed down the track Budget enough money to replace the clutch while your there!

My box had 5th gear bearing fail recently. If yours is only humming now do something before it gets worse.I am in the process of swapping in a second hand box and will rebuild the original next year.

After much gnashing of teeth, and wringing of hands, I have decided to carry on. I've done the sums, and I can buy a reconditioned gearbox from Ashcroft, and even with postage , it is marginally cheaper than buying here.I know buy local, I normally do. However, this is serious. I'm taking no prisoners. My sons are backing me up.No. 3 son has just bought a brand new Hi-lux , and said he would tow me if I broke down. I can not refuse that challenge. And besides, I'm old. This will probably be my last major challenge. I will not go out with a whimper.

WOW! Nice of 3rd son to offer a tow..... actually I accepted a jump start from a tourist in a Tojo once and it didn't hurt at all. .....
Luckily he hadn't the faintest idea what the difference was between a Landie and his Asian vehicle so that made it easier.
Keep up the good work, sometimes our Landies give us grief but so do all the "lifted and locked' "built not bought" lot as well, but they won't ever tell anyone about it!

PS. My prob. was a flat battery caused by an oaf at an ARB branch wiring up the dual battery wrongly so the beer fridge drained the cranking battery while keeping my beer my beer cold.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with keeping beer cold. Beats Kimberley cool. The ARB chap has obviously not been in the Territory.
