    Brakes Issue

I've got a 2000 TD5 D2. My wife commented today that when the car is turned off that putting ur foot on the brakes won't stop it rolling down our driveway. She put the handbrake on quickly to stop any badness happening. She then started the car and the brakes worked like normal.

Am I right in assuming that this is not normal? The brake pads are due for replacing as they're approach 3mm all round. I bought this car from a dealer in January & since have replaced all the fluids except the brakes & coolant. The brake fluid although seems 'murky', haven't given me any problems so far. There's no 'brake fade' when it's hot.

Any ideas? I'm becoming more mechanical since buying this car. Master cylinder or normal 'quirk'?

I'd appreciate advice as I'm taking it camping for 3 days from Tuesday. Thanks in advance.

When engine is not running no vacuum for brakes
This will happen with all modern cars
Twice or more effort would be required on brake pedal with no vacuum.
Do not turn off engine until vehicle has come to a full stop,
    hand brake appiled,
    Selector in Park.

    x2 for what northiam said.

The brakes are assisted via a vacuum driven servo which makes the braking effort required from the driver very little. The vacuum pump is only driven when the engine is running therefore you'd require a lot of force to stop the vehicle without it running.

You've got nothing to stress about the brakes

    (provided the engine is running!)

You could fit a vacuum tank somewhere which should give u 2 or 3 brake applications with the engine off before running out of vacuum assistance.

My wife called me in a panic about this issue, hence posting it here. When I got home I pressed the brake with the engine off and it was hard to stop it rolling back down the driveway. But it did stop with enough force. I gave her a quick overview on how brakes work & we're all good now

Had an old Peugeot with 4 wheel discs that spat the booster years ago....I was a poverty stricken student and it was a V6 that had a big carby on it and did about 12mpg so all my cash went into the tank...I got used to shoving the pedal hard and it would still pull up fine.
Used to scare the **** out of anyone else who drove it though!
Also when I drove anything else I had to remember not to stand on the brake pedal...

My old SIII had a front disc conversion without a power booster. A sudden stop came close to requiring BOTH feet...

Back to the original subject - that's pretty much how my D2's brakes behave.
    Cheers,
