Yep mate I screw them back in where I can too...haha. I used my SLR for jobs but now use my S7 as the cam is so good. I also make notes on Evernote about bits I need as I'm going and notes about things like 'front L and R side bolts of intake manifold are longer than rest' and refer to notes under headings as I reassemble. Cheers
use painters tape on the electrical connections to keep them up out of the way.
Be bloody careful not to drop the crank angle sensor between the bell housing and block when you're putting it back in.
use guide dowels
put the oil filter on before you put the engine in.
pull the radiator out clean up the condensor and intercooler while you're there.
cover the condensor with piece of card board and sleeve the radiator with it before you install it.
its out .replace the fan bearing on the timing case.
loctite the oil pump bolt and every other thing that needs it on the way..
did you slot the manifold and do anything about the head studs?

now in regard to the electronic side should there be an issue if we swap over the ecu's from the donor car to the other? ie a nanocom job or a fairly strait fowards swap?

The crank angle sensor is on top of the bellhousing. It is easy to forget to disconnect it. Protect the radiator with something, i use thin ply wood. Remove the fan, bonnet and exhaust pipe before removing engine. Put the engine on TDC before removing. Put the new engine on TDC when fitting. It is just a good habbit and can make life easy when doing manual. If auto and you have not ever done a auto removal or refit before reaearch it. There is heaps of info on here and on Ashcrofts site. It is vitality important to get the torque converter mounted corectly to the auto before fitting to the engine. Hope that helps.
You'll need a nanocom or similar to do security learn, are the d2,s both auto ? , it won't work if the donor car is manual and recipient is auto, are the engines both 10p or 15 / 16 p?, ecu's msb or nnn ?,also on top of what others have suggested , it would be a good time to do engine mounts , fuel cooler o rings , also change the power steering pump o ring and make sure the vacuum pump oil return hose is good ditto the clamps
Some time ago a mate did an engine/transfercase/auto swap in his TD5 D2.His had 475K+km and was tired plus the auto was playing up.
He bought a wreck with 100K on it and swaped out the whole lot in one go(engine/transfer/gearbox).The trick was to have the front of the D2 lifted high enough(from memory 44gal drum height) so the gearbox etc can drop down and get lifted up thru the engine bay with a forklift.
He did the swap out in a day.
