    Glass removal

I am in the process of dismantling a disco 2a v8. The major components are out and I am going to start on the rest. Is there any trick in removing the fixed glass panels including the windscreen. Any help appreciated
    John.

You can actually buy a windscreen removal tool from most auto stores, or use a sharp knife or box cutter Blade carefully from the inside of the vehicle to cut through the urethane sealer.

A piece of picture framing wire and a couple of dowels on the end as handles acts like a wire saw to cut through the adhesive. If your trying to strip these glass items to resell, it's the sort of thing that will sit around or a long time. For the cost of new screens fitted most punters wouldn't bother trying to fit second hand glass themselves.

    Wire

Braided wire, Picture frame hanging as Mario said or Guitar string or piano wire, these give you flexibility.

You need to be able to force a bit of heavy wire sharpened to a point to make your start point, feed the chosen cutting wire through then put your toggle on the end as a handle.

A stanley knife or other box cutter is much more difficult to handle.

Make sure you put NO PRESSURE on the windscreen or it will crack, cut all around till it is free. I'm not sure about the side glass, I think it is manufactured differently.

    Cheers

    SIKAFLEX

Sikaflex is what bonds most windscreens in cars these days, it is so good the windscreen actually helps with the rigidity of the body.

Gone are the old days when it was easy to refit a broken windscreen, now you must let the Sikaflex cure for the right time, not slam a door shut with the windows up before it has cured or the air pressure will push the screen back out!

Side, wind down windows were sealed/held in place with a strip of raw rubber, dip it in petrol and quickly fit it and the glass into the channel and it would expand and set.

Oh for the simple old days, never mind the lead in the petrol !!

    Cheers
