    disco 2 rattle at 2200rpm

Hi just i recently brought a disco 2 auto diesel and have a very annoying rattle coming from underneath at 2200 rpm , if i accelerate hard it doesn't rattle as rpm needle fly's past the 2200 rpm mark (well not fly past but fast enough) iv'e checked the exhaust pipe and it doesn't seem to be catching anywhere ,banged on the exhaust to see if anything loose inside all good
was wondering if it would be the expandable bit of pipe between the manifold and the exhaust pipe under the bonnet??
iv'e read a bit about this annoying problem but haven't read if anyone has actually sorted it out ,if anyone has could you please pass on the intel as it would be much appreciated

The most likely cause by far is the hand brake shoes rattling against the backing plate, and wearing a groove.

While driving at 2200RPM pull the handbrake on lightly , and if the rattle stops then BINGO.

You can weld the backing plate and /or replace the shoes. I took some pictures of the wear some time ago and posted them.

I am told it is better to Braze the wear points in the backing plate as brazing has greater lubricant properties .
There is a factory fix of really strong retention springs (red) but I couldn't get them compressed enough to fit the little turn retainers after I fixed my backing plate.

From an earlier post of mine.

"If you are going to replace the shoes and springs to get rid of the rattle there is a Land Rover Tech Bulletin No.0022 that describes a modification to the left hand shoe to rectify and the springs you should use (Red) to replace the original hold down springs. Also it would be good to get rid of the wear points on the back plate. The Tech Bulletin can be found on this site."

Do the AULRO Google at the bottom of the page

want to see why the TD5 handbrake rattles?
I have since found re the adjustment that if you take the pin from the handbrake lever the cable can be pulled down.

Also I have since found a good cure for the oil soaked shoes, which was to have my wife drive the car with the handbrake on until it smoked profusely causing occupants of the car to seek to exit which was impossible as my wife superlocked the car while trying to remove the key from the ignition.

Ah one day we will look back and laugh but not around my wife please.
BTW I have found Chrome does not resize the pictures in this thread but Edge does. I tried Cntrl + but this blurs the image.

Check the balance weight next to the handbrake drum, they do come loose and rattle, common issue.

I had a rattle very much like your turned out to be the strange weighted part that hangs off the back of the transfer case next to the hand brake drum just came loose a quick tighten all good.
