Unfortunately you can just get a bad one.
I would be very interested in a 4.5 or so litre small block Alloy Chevy.
Cheers

I just drove about 20ks and no knock.
Next time it happens I'll put a "stethoscope" on it and try to isolate where it's coming from and try and count them.
If worst comes to worst I think I'll go for this from V8 Developments in the UK:
Lightened and dynamically balanced 4.6 litre short engine (cylinder block, crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons).
The cylinder block is acid-dipped, sonically crack-tested, line-bored, and fitted with 'Top Hat' liners. The pistons are pocketed to allow for high lift / long duration camshafts.
These engines start from ?1,750 for a standard one as described above. Which in Aus dollars is about $2,860 plus freight.
That was my pick from that site,,
be aware the compression ratio with flatops will be fierce!
also confirm the cam lift is not too high for the standard valve springs(which should be replaced--)
I've had a look on Youtube at other ticking/knocking engines and they all seem to be at half the speed of mine. So maybe it's camshaft related?
Thanks for the heads up Pedro; I've got Chev valve springs in mine which have a much higher rating than the standard double valve springs.
It would be very unusual for the noise to be the only symptom of a loose liner in a 4.6ltr .
A 3.5ltr will happily make noise as the only symptom .
Good news! I hope.
Just went and started up the engine with my "stethoscope" in hand and the knock is present. I listened at lots of places and it seems the noise is not coming from the block or heads. Tried the ACE pump and the AC, nothing. Turned it off and checked if somehow the fan was hitting something. Nope. Started it up and the knock is there. Sounds like it's at the very front of the engine.
So I took the belt off and started it up. No knock. Running sweet as. So I'm thinking it's the power steering pump I put in on Wednesday. I'll look at it further in the morning after the engine and the ambient cools down.
Could I have somehow put the belt on wrong and the pump was spinning in reverse?
Awesome. Gotta have a win sometimes. Cheers
The knock is fixed!
Turns out I didn't tighten the bolts that hold the power steering pump pulley on after I fitted the new pump; they were only finger tight.
Phew!!!!
