    D2 heater/air con fan

G'day guys, its been a while but i need your help again. the other day (yes, the first day of a heatwave) my climate control fan mounted under the glove box stopped working. at first i thought it may have been just a busted fan but with the help of Ken (Outback 1) i have ruled that out. so far, to trouble shoot the problem i have:

    1. tested the fan by connecting it directly to the battery.....it works
    2. plugged in a complete working heater box including the two relays and the resistor.....no worky still
    3. swapped over the climate control unit under the radio.....no worky still
    4. checked the voltage at the fan connector at the heater box - got over 12v on high power and just under 10.something volts on the lower powers
    5. checked the earth to the fan connector on the heater box - 0 ohms on high power (my continuity meter buzzed) and 2 hundred and something ohms resistance on the lower settings (same resistance as i got when checking the resistor mounted on the heater box)
    6. checked the voltage at the power connector too the heater box - a good 12v and a good earth
    7. plugged the fan directly into the power connector to the heater box, thus bypassing the heater box completely.....still no worky
    8. traced the power wire from the heater box (red with brown stripe) back to the engine compartment fuse box and plugged the fan into the output from the fuse box....fan works
    9. i checked the current coming out of the fan connector behind the glove box by earthing the fan and putting my meter in series between the power wires and i got a reading of 0.12 mAmps
    10. checked every fuse in the car by pulling it out and inspecting it and then again by using my multimeter to check the continuity whilst in situ.

so, from what i can gather, i'm getting enough voltage to the fan but i'm not getting enough current. when i cycle through the fan speed settings the relays are clicking and the relay in the resistor is working.

do you guys have any idea of what is in between the engine compartment fuse box and the fan that could be causing this or what else i could check?

    cheers, Geoff

In case it helps the blower fan power comes from fusible link 4 (100A) under the bonnet to fuse number 7 on the inside fuse box (via a Brown and Pink wire). Power for Switching of the fan comes from fusible link 8 to fuse 31 on the inside fuse box (via the ignition switch)

I haven't looked at the wiring schematic so I'm not sure I follow your diagnostics, and I also note you state you swapped in a working heater box with relays, but 'clicking' relays does not necessarily mean they're functioning. Have had several relays not conduct current under load despite clicking closed and showing continuity when tested.

thanks Gary, i have tested the fan and it works after the 100A fusible link. i will check the fan at the inside fuse box to try and narrow it down a bit further.

Hey ballbag, i have rotated and tried the 4 relays i have in my posession and the result is the same every time. for this reason though i measured the current and tried to run the fan directly off the power to the heater box (at the connector to the heater box) thus totally bypassing all the relays but with no luck.

    Cheers, geoff

    ok...update

so ive got power coming into the inside fuse box via the brown/pink wire (as well as at fuse 31) but i dont have enough power to light my test lamp at fuse 7. there is also corrosion on the plastic part of the plug where the brown/pink wire comes into the fuse box

looks like i may be chasing up a new fuse box

I had a similar problem with my heater/AC fan. Turned out to be a bad soldered joint in the fuse box.
Not easy to get the fuse box out but but it cost nothing to fix.

cheers guys, turned out it was a fault in the fuse box. swapped it over and shes right to go. i don't want to talk too early but since swapping the box over i haven't had my pesky hill decent light come back on so crossing fingers, i may have fixed two problems in one.
