My guess is glow plugsThe symptoms are the same .
Hi,
I have been struggling to resolve my cold starting issues for some time now. The car takes about 3 cranks to get it going and then it runs rough for 10 or so seconds and then finally runs fine. Turn it off, come back 10mins later it starts fine. Leave it overnight though, it struggles to start again.
Here is a list of common thing's I've replaced and it's still an issue:
- Fuel Pump
- Fuel Filter Housing and Filter
- Fuel Pressure Regulator
- Fuel Injector Washers and O-rings
- Injector Harness
- MAF
I have done a few trails such as fitting additional non-return valves on the high pressure line near the FPR, and an air bleed screw on an old fuel filter housing to help manually bleed the system with no success. I have even re-routed the fuel lines between the fuel pump and fuel filter housing so that only the high pressure side of the fuel pump is utilised, however this did not resolve the issue either, so returned everything back to standard again.
I am waiting for a new engine loom, but I'm sceptical on whether this will do anything to resolve the issue. The issue must be fuel line related, ie letting air in. A few weeks ago I noticed a small leak on the high pressure line plastic quick release fitting that connects to the fuel pressure regulator, replaced the o-rings in the quick release fitting (with great difficulty), the problem was then fixed for a few weeks and then it started again.
So I'm thinking I have issues with air getting into the system elsewhere. I have read about the fuel lines chaffing through between the tank and the body, but so far I have found no visible leaks. There are no visible leaks near the fittings on the new fuel filter housing either.
My next steps are to pull the carpet up (again) and inspect the quick release fittings that connect to the fuel pump.
Can everyone please share their experiences with this please?

They might have been changed but did you make sure they are powering up and working![]()
you done a compression test?

Did you use genuine injector washers and made sure both sealing faces were spotless and crack free ?. Also check cam timing and injector rollers as well as bump clearance. Regarding compression, if it's not breathing excessively from oil filler and cylinder balance is within limits its more than likely ok. If your going to check the fuel pump lines and o rings , and this hasn't already been done then cut the carpet under the cargo bins if its a 5 seater , cheers
Hmmmmm, sounds like you have done all that is reasonable.
Have you opened the ECU behind the battery and checked if it is full(so to speak) of oil??
I had oil in the loom which was repaired by default - I cut and soldered on a new plug to the injector loom thereby stopping any chance of oil leaking into the loom.
But, I also opened up the engine ECU at the time and had a look and found that oil had leached into it. A bit of a clean with contact cleaner and a reseal and all seems too have been fine so far......
Cheers,
Jason
Interesting you mention that Jason. I put my old MSB ECM back yesterday, and the issue seems to have gone away. I might open up the NNN ECM and see if there is any oil in that.

Hi Hendrik'
I am trying to fix a similar issue on a D2A with an NNN ECM for someone, I changed his
injector seals and washers yesterday with no cure. I don't want him to spend too much unnecessarily,
did you open your ECM and find any oil?
Thanks
Nick
