I have only driven two D2's and haven't had that much time behind the wheel of this one i have now, after lurking on this Forum for years i know what to expect on the maintenance side and it's a joy to drive, my only dislike is the auto shift points the motor just seems to scream "I need another gear"! in there somewhere.
This is something i will get used too but i do think Ford/Landrover "drop the ball" buy not introducing a 5 speed in the early 2000"s when most of their competitors were running with them.
Just love the ACE was Landrover the first manufacturer to design this.

We drive every kind of 4x4 on all the worst roads in Australia...

Would I spend 60-80K on a new something...

Well no. I will keep my beloved Disco 2. It goes better, looks better and has everything I want and I don't have to borrow money for a car I don't like.

I think spending a few grand every now and then over the next decade is worth it.. much better than HAVING to spend $800 per month on something new and not loving it as much as the Disco II. Besides, for that money you just get a Vehicle.. with the Disco II each time I spend cash on it... it's an UPGRADE!!!

Besides... there's a badge on the front and a lump under the bonnet that makes this thing just that bit cooler... !

When I jumped from the D2 to the D3 I couldn't believe how much better the D3 was, the D2 is OK but there is no comparison. When I get back into the loaner D2 it vibrates and shudders the wind noise is annoying and OMG it's gutless, the mirrors are tiny the 4 speed sucks and it isn't a patch on the D4 comfort wise.
The only place where a D2 is better is in being able to be modified and even then it would take a fair bit to catch up to a standard D4 off road.

Sorry to rain on your parade but while the D2 was OK in it's day it really doesn't compare to the D4.

It's about maintenance a well maintained D2 does not vibrate and is smooth. With HSE seats and good suspension the D2 remains a great ride. D2 remains the best handling of the Discos. I get into the last of the d3's quite often. Petrol too so more refined than your oiler. Nice vehicle but I don't agree with you. And you will see from independent mechanics and 4wd specialists that the more time that elapsed the more people are holding onto or purchasing and appreciating D2's.

You are hardly raining on my parade because I, like the rest of the D2 owners, are on a great thing and know it. A d4 owner saying we are wrong is hardly going to matter. This thread is a celebration of what remains a great vehicle and improving with age. It just makes sense from a gamut of different perspectives not the least of which is it's perfect balance of weight and size over large bloated 4wds which is the modern trend (until LR decided all alloy was (again) the go...

    Cheers

    I completely agree.
I would have spent about 10K on my Disco2 over the last 2 years in repairs, modifications and accessories and instead of simply having something the same as every other Landrover owner I now have a truck that is personalised to my own particular wants/needs.
No forking out $800 a month for this little black duck, I own every nut and bolt debt free
