wire rods in rear passenger door lock actuator. D2 1999 TD5

Hi again everyone. I have replaced the door actuator ( the door behind the driver ).

Try as I might, I can not get the small wire rod that goes from the door handle to the actuator to stay in place.
I have the little green 'Christmas tree' in place but the wire drops out of it as soon as I to open the door handle. Should it have some sort of keeper ?
    What am I doing wrong?
All advice most welcome. Thanks Guys.
    Regards Nick.

Are you talking about the little green plastic box that clamps around the rod?

Yes that is what I call the 'Christmas tree.'
The rod goes into that green plastic bit but has nothing I can see to hold it there.but I do not know how to stop it falling out the first time I open the door handle

should look something like this, also try bending the rod a little to shorten its travel and make sure the rod is pushed all the way home into the retainer
    Cheers tt
