    Diesel or Petrol 03/04

    Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and looking to buy a D2 (2003/4). Apologies if there are similar threads, I have searched but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I am trying to determine whether petrol or diesel is the way to go. The pro's, that I can deduce, of each are economy (diesel) and price & lower kms (petrol).

Wondering if I have missed anything and am interested in what recommendations you all have.

The D2 will be the second car for the family and will be my daily commuter (~20 suburban kms per day) and weekend family camper with our twin kids.

Also I'm not much of a mechanic but willing to learn.

    Thanks in advance.

Haven't had the pleasure of owning a TD5 yet, but I've had a few V8s over the years.
Biggest thing with them is services. Regular oil and filter changes are paramount to reduce camshaft issues.
Properly serviced, they are a really nice little engine, and with a blower and methanol can produce some serious power.
The price savings equate to a lot of petrol to use.

    TD5 or V8

I have a TD5 so I am biased. How long before the lower V8 purchase price is eaten up by increased fuel costs? How much is a LPG conversion? How long do you plan on keeping the car?

I own a Td5 and love it in saying this i have owned a a series with a v8 and in stanard petrol , a couple of RRC v8`s and Tdi`s and Td5`s.
They all have their quirks like any car , The v8 boys will say the v8 and the diesel boys will say diesel .
At the end of the day if your not fussed at how much or what fuel you put in the tank drive a few of both to get the feel of what tickles you
It has to be your choice so drive a few and go with your head not your heart

I own a V8 D2 and it is the first Discovery I have ever owned.
I have owned many Turbo and naturally aspirated diesels along with many V8 petrol engines.
The advantages I can see with the diesel is lower maintenance and fuel costs also the diesel is more "Water Friendly" than the petrol V8.
Despite those advantages I went with the V8 petrol model because all my previous V8's were a lot of fun to drive, were easer/cheaper to maintain and had a Lot more "Grunt" than diesels.
I test drove both engine types before buying and the V8 was definitely more responsive and fun to drive as far as I was concerned.
Regardless engine type the D2 is an enjoyable 4WD to own and operate and as far as which engine to choose, It just comes down to personal preferences
