Thanks everyone for your thoughts. From my calcs the cost saving of the V8 purchase price will be eaten up in around 4 years. I drove a couple more today and am definitely preferring the diesel.
and no matter which one you get, make sure you do the hiclone modification to improve power and fuel economy.

Hi I own a 02diesel disco have had it from new if you go for a diesel the first thing I would do is change all filters, oils and put a new genuine fuel injection harness this gives you a good idea of the motors health if all is good then I would be putting a provent 200 in to Chanel the oil away from the intake side of the motor. Other people can explain this provent operation better then I hope this helps good luck .
Hi Eevo,
Having seen Hiclone advertisements in 4X4 Magazines,I was interested in your very favourable comment about their use.
I just Googled up some reviews and professional opinions on them and they all were negative, saying they have zero to negligible effect.
I have no views either way but am interested in your strong belief.
On what is it based?
Cheers,
Peter.
