Hi McLaren, I was behind you at MR when you picked your Disco up Saturday week ago , nice looking wagon watched you drive up the road which was good as yours hung in 1st for ages like mine [ I am starting to worry less over the auto now].
I'm new to Disco's and TD5's myself but have a look at the turbo waste gate and it's hoses, there are video's on you tube about it, sorry have not taught myself how to post a link yet.
Have you noticed this before the service or only after, if you take the intake hose off you can see the little solenoid [modulator] that controls the waste gate, it has small vac hoses on it make sure they are ok tight fitting and not spongy.

As i said i'm new to these trucks too I'm sure the more knowledgeable guys will be along soon.

I find if I let warm up for 5 mins no dramas but if I take off straight after starting it's like it limited for 1/2 secs then everything all ok

If it's an EU3 engine (or even an EU2 running an EU3 map) it's possibly a faulty MAF. The ECU has a delay of about 30 seconds before it errors cause a switch to MAP/IAT fuelling.

it willl only happen if the MAF output is very low at idle, so disconnected or airflow in the low 40s.

i haven't seen this happen personally, but one of the uk tuning companies asked me if I had a fix for the 30second timeout for a Race truck running an EU3 motor without the MAF. So I spent a bit of time looking at which conditions trigger this.

I don't think that will really identify cause.

The disconnect will work if you have a MAF that is misreading badly but still giving something like 50kg/hr at idle.
In that case the ECU continues to run on the MAF, and performs badly as a result, so disconnecting the MAF gives good indication it's off colour.

What I suspect could be happening occurs when the MAF is reading less than 45kg/hr at 760rpm.
That is the equivalent of a MAF voltage of about 1.7V cf normal reading which is around 2.0V at idle.

So you can back probe* the connector on the MAF to measure the voltage with a multimeter.
Alternatively see if someone can hook up a diagnostic tool to check the live data for the MAF.

    * How to back probe any sensor. | Enduring Automotive
