Here are the heads after they came back from the engine rebuilder. Looks like he's done a great job.
Pressure tested, cleaned, machined (16/1000th due to twist in one of the heads), new seats, lapped, valve heights set to factory spec.

Just struck a possible problem. Are these heads identical? I didn't mark them and can't tell them apart!

Yes.

Well hit some real trouble now!
Firstly one of my head gaskets has a chip missing, then, while doing up the bolts, my angle gauge fell out, so I have no idea where the ninety degree mark is. In fact I don't really trust the others either.
Can I torque them up to some other value to save this situation or do I start again with new bolts and gaskets?

Alan, 90 deg mark is easy, mark a dot with liquid paper on the head next to the bolt, then mark the head of the bolt also, then you can turn the head ninety degrees from the dot on the head. No don't use any other method of torquing it must be done in degrees with torque to yield bolts other wise you will have a head gasket failure. Give me a call regards, Mario
Too late. I've alread done the first 90 degree bit. But haven't a clue if all is good due to issues with angle gauge. Looks like I'll be after a new gasket and bolts.

It seems to me I have two options.
1. Mark head of new bolt, remove bolt #1, install new bolt #1 at 20Nm then 90deg turn. Do same to replace the other nine bolts in turn. Then torque up all bolts the final 90deg.
With this option all I need are ten new bolts.
2. Remove and discard all bolts, replace gasket and start again.
This will require ten new bolts plus a new head gasket.
What do you reckon?

Mate if there is any real doubt about the ones you have done you have no choice but to remove them all and get new bolts (or better still head studs that you can re use) ....as for gasket depends where gouged bit is but again if in doubt and it's part of clamped surface buy another (the fact that it's been clamped down per as is not a problem if motor hasn't been started ). Cheers
