    Best oil to use

    Hi all new to forum just picked up a 1999 discovery2 V8 had engine replaced with the range rover 4.6l 90,000kms ago just after recomendations on best engine oil, coolant auto trans fluids ect. Going to tow caravan around the top end in July so wanting the best to service with and take with me on the trip.

    The other thing to consider is the history of the vehicle, as it is quite old now you won't know what oil has been used in there before, no good spending big bucks on expensive oil now if all its had is ordinary oil in it previously. They are not a high tech engine, they have been around for a long time in various derivatives, a quality oil per manufacturer specs is really all they need,and regular changes.

    To be honest that is almost the exact opposite of my experience with these engines. A good quality can still double the remaining life of the engine despite not knowing its complete history. The only time to put cheap oil in these engines is 1. you have no other oil available or 2. its planned life is in the weeks or months bracket.

    I would use a Penrite HPR15 engine oil in this engine myself, with a bit of luck it will still be running well with 400K or more on it.

    Sorry maybe you misunderstood me, I didn't mean mean cheap and nasty oils, I said to specs, the penrites etc , but no need to go for the mega expensive fully synthetic oils.

    HPR15 is a full synthetic although not the most expensive oil you can buy. What makes this stuff better for RV8's than many other "good" quality oils on the market is it's zinc additives, designed for flat tappet engines. Many modern oils wreck RV8 camshafts because they are not designed for these. I am very careful as to what I will run a Land Rover engine on.

    I have moved from 10w50 Penrite to the 20w60 HPR30 with full zinc. It's a thicker mineral oil but in my view the engines run better on 20w60. My 2cw.

    Back in the day when I had to use a mechanic to service the car due to warranty, they used 20w50.

    When I started doing my own changes I read the manual which stated for my HC engine I should use 5w30.

    I decided on using Penrite HPR 5 5w40 because of the extra Zinc as stated before.

    The engine now runs much more smoothly & seems much more free & eager to rev.

    Considering where you live and the age of the vehicle I'd be moving over to HPR 10

    There is significantly more Zinc in the mineral HPR30 20w60 versus the synthetic HPR 10 synthetic.

    I live in the same general area as Cannon. The thinner oil let's the engine rev more quickly but I'm not convinced the old motors (by design as mine has done less than 40,000k) wear best on 10w (and 5w despite what dealers used to use is just too light in my view).
