Question LT230 - changing the diff centre, what else is needed?

I'm looking to order an Ashcroft LT230 Type B ATB diff centre. My transfer box currently seems to be in good order - it has no leaks (yes, it's full of oil) and doesn't make any foul noises or anything. Aside from a gasket kit, should I order anything else with the new diff centre? Ie is it worth changing the bearings etc while there?

Mine does not have gaskets. If yours is sealed with sealastic don't change it to gaskets as it will effect the pre-loads. I'd put a seal kit including o-rings through it as well. You will need a new nut to hold the gears and bearing on the ATB (Special nut) as well and a new nut for the intermediate shaft. Loctite Blue.

If your LT230 is sealed without gaskets, do not use a screw driver to separate the alloy housings it will damage them. Use something like a paint scraper to maximize surface contract. You will also need a gear puller to remove the gear set and bearings from the shaft you have. You will likely damage the bearings so have replacements.

Good luck, it is one of those tasks that is simple in theory but more difficult than it should be in practice.

AFAIK all D2 transfer boxes are gasket free. Sealing is done with STC4600, which is Hylomar 3400.

I didnt know about this sealant thing and when mine leaked bad i bought the RTC3890 kit and insisted to my mechanic to fit it cos in my mechanical dumbness i thought that the previous owner didnt fit them to go cheap... all i can say it's that it's been leakless since and no other probs though i can't vouch that it's the right thing to do
    Discovery Td5 (2000), manual, tuned
