Leaking Coolant - head gasket ?

Thanks for that, my hopes for some 'divine help' on this not happening. I guess if I am going to replace the gasket for the pump, it will be prudent to also replace the pump as well.

Hi,
The gaskets are o-rings. If you go to the trouble, and be prepared for a fair few hours of trouble, cursing and bad language, of getting the pump out, best just ditch it and replace it with a new one.
The tools that may become your best friends are 1/4 and 3/8 sockets with appropriate rigid extension bars...... Make sure you have all the other gaskets, including centrifugal filter drain pipe x 2 on hand, and a new oil filter, before you start... The job took me a full day in the end, and rework on the oil drain gaskets.
Hopefully you won't find what I did, after being assured by seller that "water pump was done last year". It might have been last year, but all that was "done" was it was stuffed with silastic, and was FUBAR in the drive and seal department......

Thank you for this, really helpful. I had a look at the Discovery2 website and he suggested get a 8mm ratchet spanner which I got at the weekend. Made a laugh as he mentions it at least 3 times ! I will get the gaskets and a new filter as you suggest.

Finally, eBay has a lot of Airtex pumps available and they supposedly are the Land Rover OEM replacement part. Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations ?

So I went with the Airtex and fitted over the weekend using the guide from Discovery2.co.uk to do it which was hugely helpful. Took longer as expected as one of the remaining centrifugal bolts wouldn't come off and had to drill out. As suggested, it is a pig of a job, especially getting the new pump with 3 x O-rings in having put a some aviation gasket sealer on them to help them stay in place.

All good though and no leaks anymore, will wait a couple more days and if all good will replace with usual coolant.

I had great difficulty getting the turbo banjo bolt back in, you need 3 hands and in the end loosened the other end of it which gave more length to get it back in. It did the trick, but I inadvertently bust the washer screwing it back in, drove down the driveway to see a long unbroken trail of oil. Amazing how much oil can come out when these are not fitted right.

Luckily I had a spare and torqued up to 25NM as required and all sorted now, but checked oil this morning and was below minimum.

So fingers crossed it was the pump, and a good job done. I always think it is good to finish off these posts and say thank you to all for all the help along the way, and happily say very sore hands today !!IMG_0307.jpg
