    A trap for young players.

Well, after sighting what I took for a leak in the clutch master cylinder, I removed same , after perusing RAVE. Sure enough , evidence of a slight leak under the rubber boot was enough to convince me to replace both master and slave. Long story short, when removing the slave cylinder, the piston rod came out with it. Now the piston rod is usually located on the clutch release lever by a plastic clip. This clip now slid up & down the piston rod, at this point I should have spoken to some one who knew to see if I could replace said clip to its rightful position in situ. Perhaps it was because the job had gone so well up to this point, I decided to push on. Murphy pricked his ears. Surely it would be easy to line up the piston rod to its rightful spot, how hard could it be? Murphy rubbed his hands. The slave replaced, the clutch bleed was going great, then , the clutch pedal seized solid. I removed the slave cylinder, and to Murphy's delight, and my dismay, the piston rod, rubber cap, piston and spring were now some where in the bell housing near the release lever. Could it get any worse? I could feel the bits close to the entrance hole, and my clumsy arthritic hands managed to push them further inside, out of reach. "Of course it could", said Murphy , with a giggle. Tomorrow I try the magnet, if that fails it's the RACQ truck to DR MR. If you see an RACQ truck on its way to Redcliffe tomorrow with a D2 on board, with a demented Leprechaun on top, chances are it's mine. I guess this proves you don't get smarter as you get older.

The problems of the auto gearbox are well documented. At least I had a go, and I learned something. Give it a try sometime,

And you'd miss out on the sublime pleasure of manually changing gears. I'll get a D6 or D 8 or what ever when the D2a manuals are all gone.

How hard would it be to put a manual in a d4? Just like the few proper D threes!!

Love this Manual Auto banter that's appeared lately.
Just remember next time guys with Autos with flat batteries out in the middle of no where and have no mobile reception to call for assistance, just remember ya cant push start an auto. Manuals can roll start.A Manual with a stuffed clutch in the middle of no where can still be driven, a stuffed auto is flatbed.
    I'm not biased for either.

Given the concept involved, ever wonder if Murphy's Law was named after the wrong guy.....

Bob, I feel your pain by the way. My last couple of 'simple' jobs ended up taking on epic proportions.

Yeah, this time it's my fault. All I had to do was ring to get the drum on this piston rod clip, but no, how hard can it be.......

If you are out in the middle of no where with no phone reception how do you call the flatop?
    aaaaaaand--
If you are out in the middle of no where with no phone reception and are silly enough to have only one battery(or be by yourself) you didnt really plan it very well/deserve everything you get.

Don't have to be camping. I got back to work at 3 AM once to find a dead batt in the D1. The driveway was down hill, but there was a maybe 50mm lump in front of the car. Could I push it over it? Guess. I wound up connecting the jumper leads to the bosses ride on mower and leaving it to charge for 30 mins or so. Which i could have done equally as well with an auto.

100% all this ... it's all about that preventative maintenance . If you are going to put yourself in a situation, ensure you have a plan B.
