You might have to invest in one of those hybrid turbo cartridges like posted by Rangieman, it might give you a bit more ooomph.
I have just been away for two weeks from Central Coast to Noosa and parts between in my 2002 TD5 auto towing my say 900Kg loaded camper trailer.
Some observations.
With my Serck intercooler , BAS map, decat etc I can now use cruise control on most of the highway.
On steeper hills I have to looka t the EGT meter closely as the cruise will flatten it and drop out of lock while simultaneously hitting my alarm at about 720C.
The cruise is worst when you go down a hill and immediately climb another, as it tends to slow down until it hits bottom then flattens it. Cruise is IMHO just about impossible to use towing with a stock tune.
I filled in Brisbane at the corner of Newnam Rd 7Eleven, and have 2 notches above the red at home in my 150 l tank so must be about 12l per100km travelling at 110 when allowed, as distance was about 1000Km even.
Diff lock works well, and I found that if you have the diff lock light connected on start up then you can disengage and reengage without losing ABS etc, something I didn't know.
I had to get a new Optima Blue top in Brisbane from a bloke at Acacia Ridge who sells them but told me lots of luck as since production is now in Mexico the quality has deteriorated greatly. I had a no start at Hastings Point until I joined the house battery which was unused as site on power , so didn't want to risk a low house battery and stuffed start battery.
Oil and water levels are unchanged from the trip so good news .

Definitely agree with you about cruise control not being too good when towing. It can't anticipate, so for example, going down a hill it brakes and then it has to accelerate up the next hill, which knocks fuel consumption. Only really much good on flat roads at steady speeds.
