This bit is very interesting Phillip,
Factory 4.0 and 4.6 motors have low down torque limited to reduce NOx, and the main attribute of the Motronic was to limit emissions which meant both a lean mixture and relative retard at low rev

Ok did some experimenting. At 1200rpm in 5th gear (bear in mind the manual can't gear down like the auto can in 4th...) if I floor her she pulls smoothly from 40kph to 60kph in about 3 seconds and at 1200rpm when flooring it the timing advance is 15 to 16 degrees reading 20 degrees by 1800rpm and increasing advance quickly as revs increase...would not have thought that sort of advance is bad at all. The Bosch took advantage of twin knock sensors to extract maximum advance to give better power (better burn? One would think) and torque without pinging. This is a very advanced system and lifted straight of the flagship 7 and 8 series V8 BMWs and modded for torque.

Not many motors would accelerate smoothly as the 4.6 Thor in 5th (manual) at 1200rpm on the flat with 31 inch tyres, all the weight of my vehicle as modified and all wheel drive

    Cheers

yea, hard to compare but thats great info--
loaded up (caravan) and locked up at at 2K revs, mines at 12BTC,, and that doesnt move much at all, all the way to 100kph,,
hard to lock up 4th below around 1900,, will hold that and accelerate though--

all things being equal I think my timing is different,,
mind you I will check without the van,,

any excuse for a hard run to 100,,

Interesting Pedro. So what is the greatest advance you see anywhere in the revs? Cheers

the good advice from all of the above is
    keep it locked up.
The V8 will lockup at 60,, yes even with 2T on the back,,
and it will stay locked up down to 60,,

any sort of climb at 80 kays with a 4.6 will see you locked up in 3rd,,

on the flat mine will accelerate happily from 1900rpm in 4th locked up.

put a trans cooler on VERY QUICKLY or the new box will burn like the old one---
there are a LOT of threads covering this-- and yes I have the biggest I could find.

Fuel? Plan on around 25L per hundred, but you should see better than that,,

Double change the trans fluid and use a synthetic, Castrol Tansmax Z is THE best,, but not many can afford it,, the regular castrol syn is good.

The gearing in 4th is rat**** for towing any sort of load, at 2100rpm at 100 kays theres little on offer,, add just ten KPH and things just run along swimmingly
    Hi pedro

whar are the details of the cooler you have?
completely agree, an extra 5-10 km/h on the v8 getting it to 105-110 km/h it's much happier than at 100km/h.
you didn't mention mention sport mode, I generally don't use sport so I can encourage the v8 to say in 4 th as long as possible when towing heavy loads.
although I do know that when it does change it unlocks first before deciding if it's not enought before a real down change.
