D2a V8 Auto Reverse no Drive

Hi all, ill start with a little history.
i was given a 2004 D2a V8 Auto by my Sister, not drivable after having a fight with a roundabout. i've read a fair but im on a very steep learning curve i have the car in Bonnyrigg and i have just moved from Port macquarie to Wallsend so access is hard. at this point we found the following:
the first fault we found was the transfer case would not engage in high or low range, so we have replaced it.
    1. transmission no forward or reverse - we have flushed the transmission and refilled - we now have some reverse
    2. starts in park but not neutral
    3. there are no lights for Drive or reverse but all others show Park 1,2,3.

at this i am going to pull the XYZ switch tomorrow when i go back to Sydney for the day, i am hoping its not the gearbox.

at this point i'm feeling a bit lost so any help graciously received

might have been an idea to remove trans filter and see how much crud is in it, does it try and move in 1st gear? how many km,s on it? I do have a V8 trans with 170K on it had to use the oil pump out of it (Rebuilt my trans using parts from a BMW trans and the V8 one) though and the A clutch is stripped have been meaning to assemble it with a guide on setting up clutch pack heights.

what sort of damage is on vehicle after round about incident? this might have something to do with problems, the xyz switch might need adjusting remove it and plug it back in and see if all lights come on when moved by hand, others on here have stripped these switches and cleaned them up
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

Assuming you topped up the trans with engine running, can you feel 6 clicks from p through to 1st correlating with readout on dash ? If the numbers on dash disappear then likely xyz and as stevo mentioned they can be repaired , replace the rivets you drill out with bolts of the right length , you should still get forward motion even if xyz is faulty

The no forward and some reverse was a symptom of mine (TD5) and it was the A pack in the trans. It would creep forward with lots of revs though.

the car has done about 175k , drained the transmission oil was pretty dirty but filter was not that bad, just pulled the xyx looks really clean just about to put it back together and readjust , before it had no lights for N and D, still have the entire console out from changing the transfer case. Owen will write back later

Hi yes we still had the console out after changing the transfer case, that was what the initial fault when I was given the car, transfer case would engage in either high or low.

Put the xyz back together looks really clean, no display for R N and D, changed the tranny fluid, cleaned the filter, looked ok, looks like I'm after a replacement transmission on my next visit to Sydney in 2 weeks time.

This doesn't make sense. The lights are only from the switch, if the auto was buggered the lights would still appear. I'd open the switch again and clean all the grease from the contacts, i mean really clean it will degreaser in a can, maybe spray it with WD40 and reassemble it. Clean the connectors too.

I found adjusting the XYZ switch easiest when starting in N.

The cover for the shifter doesn't normally need to come off, but with a one piece wooden consoles i could imagine why you would remove it to get to the handbrake cable.

When I had forward but no reverse it was because i left out an o-ring inside the transmission, but i still had all the lights on the console and the display on the dash worked.

Hi Stevo, looks like I have to have another go at my xyz switch only lights up in 123 &up, my mate thinks the tranny is stuffed, oil was burned bad and we only got about 4l out of the whole system, it was black and it stank, I'm coming down to Sydney again on Saturday week to work on the car, how much do you want for your box? Regards owen
