Transfer case may have been OK after all ?, you should be able to pick up a good second hand transmission cheap enough , make sure it's a good one though, the v8 discos should be plentiful for wrecking and the auto's in the v8's have an easier time than the td5's generally, make sure you either get the torque converter recond or fit the one with the new box , fwiw you shouldn't have to touch the centre console for removal or replacement of either transfer case or transmission .

Thanks for that, when I was first given the car, the transfer case would not engage in either low or high(brother in law had been using a ratchet strap to hold it engaged before my sister bounced the gutter) and he had the console 1/2 out, and in my ignorance I finished the job, it has made it easier to do stuff given I have been on working under a pair of stands in a mates driveway, thanks for the advice about the torque converter, just got to find me a box now. Owen
