Thread: Transfer case and DIFF oils

We use Nulon G70 in the work vans that have diffs that whine,it works well.Vans seem to amplify any Diff noise,due to the vehicle shape,that is, a butter box on wheels with not much sound deadening.

But if the Diff or G/B has noisey bearings,it won't stop the noise,but it may put off the inevitable rebuild a bit longer.

Thanks mate. I'm going to do Penrite 80w110 in my centre diff. I used straight Penrite 140 in the rear and a combo of 140 and 85w90 in the front diff. Should come up ok.

Hi, not being an expert re oils when my puma just had its rear diff bearings replaced by a leading Sydney diff specialist who does lots of Rover's rebuild work re warranty etc they said to use Castrol Axle LS an AD5W140 soec oil part no 3377666 available from Repco--a mineral oil as they said that the actual diff design is old so this better than synthetic ones re wear even though the synthetic one leaves everything shiny --but the mineral does a better job re protection--as said I am no expert but would trust a specialist diff and gearbox reconditioning expert.

I wouldn't as most mechs know Jack **** when it comes to lubes.
If you are using a mineral fluid, bring back your change interval to about half of the recommended mileage.

There are some brilliant mineral based diff fluids that outperform almost any full syn fluid you could name, but they aren't common and they are from obscure (in Australia) blenders.

Just be wary of people that make blanket statements.
