    Steering Ball joint removal

Recently noticed that the rubbers on all my steering knuckle ball joints were split, so planning to do a replacement

I've bought myself a removal kit New 21 pcs Ball Joint Auto Repair Remover Install Adapter Tool Set Service Kit which is a really heavy C frame with lots of sleeves.

Reading RAVE this is a pretty big job that involves dropping the front axle, and for some reason removing the axle from the hub, replacing the axle seals makes sense, but there is mention of a special insertion tool for this

There is also a very good write up on the job here on the forum, but alas it has been PhotoPhucked, this makes no mention of disassembling the hub or a special seal insertion tool.

D2 Steering Knuckle Balljoints Removal and Refitting - A How To

Can anyone shed any light on these discrepancies, ie can the job be done without dropping the axle, is there need for a seal insertion tool and why does RAVE want to dissasemble the hub?

    thanks

Re the above tool, I also bought one of those, loaned it to someone and it did the job ok, needed some mod on a couple of the tubes, you'll see when you use it, some grinding needed. I loaned it out again, and the second time the threaded rod snapped due to pressure required to remove a stubborn ball joint.

Have a look at this vid , it is in 2 parts,it shows process of doing the job.

    Regards, Mario

good vid, confirmed my suspicions that JLR reccomend dropping the axle because the JLR big ass removal tool wont fit.

Nothing in the vid about replacing the seals, is the JLR tool necessary for this job?

Don't you just hit the knuckle where the rod end goes in with a hammer a couple of times

Sorry thats how I did mine the other week on my track rod. 2-3 hits on the knuckle popped straight off

Or are we talking about the swivel hub bearings?

I broke one of those clamp tools doing the lads D2 just recently (finished all the tasks in it yesterday).

Stripping the steering down is easy... it’s getting the friggin joints out that hurts!

I now use a 12t press frame on the joints.
Went from 4 weekends of trying to no avail (heat, 8lb hammers, clamp tools etc) to a 30 minute removal of all 4 and replacement.

The swearing and skinned knuckes Youtube clip is an excellent tutorial. Thanks Mario for the loan of the removal/installation tool. Sorry to hear that it broke.
I believe that a 1/2 inch breaker bar is requiered also(makes getting the joints in/out real easy).
I think that there was some freezing of the new joints before installing them.
You will need to cut/adjust one or two of the cups in the kit to be able to complete the job.
If you follow the clips, it is all pretty easy, just a little time consuming. Watch the clips first and make sure that you are capable/confident of doing the job before starting.

    Cheers,

    Jason

Very handy videos. I’ve seen them before.

Sadly on the D2 in question Using a breaker bar 4’ long resulted in a bent clamp only.

It took 12t to remove them and went with a bang each time.
