LCD backlighting for odo and clock dimming with left hand indicator!

    Hi Guys,

I have a weird electrical issue with my D2a. The backlighting for the clock and odo flash/dim when the left hand indicator is on, when using the right hand indicator the backlights are fine, no dimming in time with the indicator, it has been an intermittent issue, but for the last couple of days it has been consistent... I have no idea where to even start trying to figure this one out!

I've been chasing my tail with a few performance issues with the Disco, and i'm starting to think it may be electrical and not mechanical... I drove to Sydney a few months ago towing a trailer to Eastern Creek, during the drive we had torrential rain around Albury all the way to Canberra. At one stage i was rounding up a B-Double when all of a sudden i lost most of my power and my dash lights were doing the same thing when the left indicator was on, i'm wondering if it is a weird earthing issue.. Are there any well documented common earthing issues i could check??
    Cheers

All I can suggest is that weird electrical stuff like this is very, very often an earthing issue.

If you have RAVE, look at the circuit diagrams, particularly those related to the indicator circuits. See if you can find any earth points, perhaps related to the flasher unit (if it's still a separate unit and not part of some all-powerful CPU/BCU thingo.) or even the indicator lamps, that looks corroded etc.

A poor earth in the LH flasher circuit could be causing lots of other low level signals (CAN Bus etc.) to show up as faulty as far as the control unit(s) (ECU/BCU) are concerned.

The interior fusebox/IDM used to suffer from water ingress and cause various issues.... watch the aircon LCD too, isnt it doing the same with the odo and clock?

Thanks, sierrafery, i did have a water ingress issue at the top right hand side of the windscreen, i believe it was part of a service notice, but mine had never been fixed.. it has now. I haven't noticed the A/C LCD, but yes, clock and odo...

I have looked at the fusebox from the front, all looks clean and orderly, i have just looked up IDM, had no idea what one was but i did have water running down the inside of the a pillar and into the footwell...

I'd better go learn what the IDM does

    Thanks
    Cheers

The IDM is integral part of the fusebox, the LCDs are connected to a dimmer circuit as to dim when headlights are on but as your's is making tricks on indicators it's very strange, to rule out an external issue you should unplug the LH front and rear light clusters and try that way, the indicator will flash faster but if the LCDs dont dim that way plug back the rear first and try and if still ok you'll have to investigate the front cluster for bad contacts or short circuits... if the symptom persists with lamps unplugged i'm affraid the problem is within the fusebox, you'll have to open it and inspect cos water damage is common inside them

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. Replaced the indicator stalk and have no dramas since then. I stripped the old stalk and washed a lot of gunk out using contact cleaner so suspect my issue was dirty contacts on the stalk.

That has logic as well just that in this case it means there's a current leak within the stalk toward the headlight circuit which activates the dimmer input into the LCDs
