    Td5 clatter?

    Hi All,

We've had our 'new' Td5 about a month and 1500km now, and so far it's running very well. BUT, to me the Td5 sounds very loud and clattery at idle. Standing in front of the vehicle, it's definitely noisier than the 300Tdi. Haven't been able to find another idling Td5 locally lately to compare with.

So, I went to RAVE to see about doing a tappet adjustment - and there isn't one! (Bl**dy LR engineers - they couldn't manage to fit hydraulic lifters to the pushrod (non-V8) engines for 4 decades, but they manage to do it to an overhead cam engine without a problem!)

But there is the 'injector bump clearance' adjustment. RAVE suggests this needs adjustment only when replacing the rocker shaft/injectors but would it be a good idea to do it when I have the cam cover off for, say, injector harness replacement?

    Thanks,
    Ian &

It won't harm anything to do them while in there, but they are most unlikely to be the source of any clatter.
You adjust them opposite to tappets, so wait until the rocker is fully depressing the injector rod, then screw the adjuster *fully* in until you feel the injector rod bottom out, then unscrew 1 to 1.5 turns. The lock off.
At full lift the injector is still under load (no free play).
Hence why it's not likely to be the cause of any clatter.

Check the air con compressor, there are a lot of reports of the bolt coming loose on these and my own ones bearing went. This caused a noticeable noise.

And check the damper on the flywheel, also reported to break up and cause noises.

    Hi
TD5 engines are unique in their sound. Comparing it with a 300 TDI you can't do.
The clatter your probably hearing is the normal sound they have.
Before you start doing anything best you compare with another.
No need to play or add just anything if you don't have to....

The hydraulic lifters can make annoying noise if they have a certain wear, mine had that too and it was miracoulously cured by Liqui Moly Tappet stop noise, i've put 2 cans in it, found an australian site: How to Fix Noisy Tappets/Lifters – LIQUI-MOLY Australia .... i presume it will have no effect if the noise is caused by other things but IMO worth a try, as i said, worked well for me, i didnt expect a miracle but the result was more than i expected( i dont have shares in it believe me)... that was about 3 years ago and this year it started progressively again so i think i'll bite the bullet and buy new lifters

No hydraulic lifters in a TD5.

OK, so lets be pedantic they are hydraulic lash adjusters not 'lifters'.

That's why they have to be stored upright and kept clean if taken out as when doing a head gasket, check RAVE.

    Cheers

In my head(which is not good with mechanics) those ERR7233 so called "lash adjusters" were in the same cathegory with lifters or tappets and it seems that they are while the lifter/tappet additive worked for them

it seems that according to wikipedia it's about different names for the same thing: Hydraulic tappet - Wikipedia so or they are wrong or you then
