I took my EU3 D2 TD5 auto for a long drive for the first time after doing the injection washers, as I have been both sick and overseas.
I notice quite an increase in power since doing the washers, and increased boost at any throttle setting. (+5% or more). The measure is climbing Mooney Mooney hill southbound where even with my mods,it would struggle to maintain 110+.Yesterday was accelerating while holding < 700C on the EGT.
It sits on 20PSI on quite light throttle openings now.
I don't know whether it is from the now good washers or from correct adjustment of the injector plungers but the increase is very real.
Makes me regret not checking the camshaft timing at the same time. LOL.

How hard is it to adjust the injectors?
Not hard:
.......
7. Rotate engine clockwise until No 1 injector lobe
is at full lift.
8. Rotate rocker adjusting screw clockwise until
the injector plunger is felt to bottom out.
9. Rotate rocker adjusting screw anti-clockwise
one complete turn to give plunger the required
bump clearance and tighten rocker arm
adjusting screw locknut to 16 Nm (12 lbf.ft) .
CAUTION: Ensure screw does not turn as
locknut is tightened.
10. Carry out above procedure for the remaining 4
rocker arms.
11. After completion of rocker arm adjustment,
slowly rotate engine clockwise 2 complete
turns by hand to ensure that no injectors are
bottoming out on their plungers

It's pretty easy like adjusting tap pets but if you get that far in you May as well do the injector washers and orings as they are probably leaking a bit even if the car starts straight away.

Is this a recommended maintenance item and if so how often? My TD5 is now at 300k km and inectors and head haven't been touched but it runs beautifully touch wood.

If your engine doesn't start first turn every time, it is probable that the injector washers are leaking letting air into the fuel rail in the head.
I am usually of the school of "if it ain't broke don't touch it" but the TD5 seems to go on forever , but loses some power unnoticed over the years and Ks.
What prompted me was that my car every now and then would not start first turn but start hesitantly after several tries. I was surprised that I got a performance and smoothness benefit from what is a repair operation.
So really its up to you. AFAIK there is no "recommended" maintenance schedule covering this, but in my case at 180KK some of my washers were leaking.

Please excuse my TD5 ignorance Phillip,,
but the only telltale is-- poor starting?
no fuel dampness or does it just always suck air?

AFAIK that is the only symptom and I guess I theorise that it is because the bad washer pushes air out of the cylinder into the fuel rail on every revolution. The leaks are probably not bad enough to drain diesel into the cylinder and cause the oil level to rise. I have seen some photos on here of black "snot" on the fuel pump screen and I think this is also a result. Please excuse my TD5 ignorance Phillip,,

If an O ring from the top of the injector leaks , the oil level will rise.
Someone with a wider experience with TD5 like Tombie may be able to add more.
