    Air Con help

With warm weather finally arriving in Melbourne it is time to sort out the aircon. When I turn it on I get a whirling gas type of noise, hard to describe, almost like when you hear gas coming out of a pipe, maybe not pressurising? Last summer I would get a small amount of cold air, but not enough to close the windows and rely on it. I really have no idea where to start with these, any pointers would be greatly appreciated ? Matt.

The refrigerant gas has mostly leaked out over time, they do that. Try visiting a mechanic and getting a regas.

Is there air coming out of the vents? Is the blower working? Next I'd probably check the heat/cooling controls. Does it heat on hi?
Next I'd check the AC clutch in the engine bay. Can you hear it engage when you turn the aircon on?
Im not sure how to check if there is gas in the system/if it needs a re-gas.
I had an aircon guy come to refill my wife's car- turns out there was plenty in there so didn't charge anything (was a compressor failure). Might be worth a try.
    Hope that helps.

Yes everything functions normally, I will check the clutch at the weekend, but I can detect the engine changes tick over slightly when I turn it on. If that is working also anything else to check or go for the re-gas. I recall reading once that you can touch the pipes coming from the aircon unit in the engine bay and they should be cold, is this right ?

I would agree - go for the regas.
As to the cold/ hot pipes. I just dropped the kids off and the pipe I’m pointing to was cold. The other pipe was hot. Not sure if that’s a reliable method/indicates levels of gas etc.
