    D2 Front Driveshaft Repair

Been covered many a time probably.

The lad's front driveshaft UJ broke on the rearmost double joint bit. Is it worth repairing it or are they best just replaced. Assuming it is worthwhile to repair, where can I get a new yoke and UJ? The front join, the shaft and the rear yoke that is fixed onto the shaft are all fine.

I have seen complete genuine shafts for around $700 and eBay ones for $170. Would imagine it will be cheapest to buy the individual bits.

Whilst it was banging around under the car it has put a dent in the transmission sump (probably lost 50-100ml of fluid capacity, dented the chassis rail, dented and holed the floor but most worryingly it chipped off the side of the gearbox flange/tore the seal right where the rubber seal overlaps the trans sump. Until I get a new seal to test I have no idea if this gearbox is now junk

Had one fail on the weekend. I have just received a HD greasable Hardy Spicer shaft from Roverlord Spares (member on this site) at a very good price. Suggest you consider the same, or a HD rebuild kit from the same supplier. Do have a spare Cardan joint and rear flange in the shed if you decide on a rebuild (send a PM). You have a few other issues / damage besides the shaft and maybe need to sort those first.
    Regards

Are the yokes available as a separate item or does yoke damage mean replacing the whole (expensive) unit?

Maybe Mr Roverlord (if he reads this) could drop me a line to discuss what he has?

I got a second hand one from a wreckers. Or could you rebuild it yourself? The kit is around $150.00

Well, if the D2's got an Achilles heel it's the front drive shaft. The angle of the drive shaft is pretty steep from the factory necessitating a DC joint for every day driving with standard spring heights and 235/70 R16 road tyres.
As the vehicle ages the springs sag and the DC joint wears (complementing each other ). Spring droop of around 25mm for an urban driven vehicle is about normal, more for an off road or loaded vehicle with standard springs. This decreases the load on the ageing DC joint.

With a mild (2") suspension lift the poor old DC joint has to cope with an additional effective 3" (or more) lift. In conjunction with larger diameter aggressive tyres and maybe a power upgrade the DC joint is doing it hard under these circumstances and some fail taking out the transmission casting along the way. You're not the first to experience this.

If you intend to keep the Disco and use it off road it would be wise to upgrade the front drive shaft to avoid a 'repeat performance'. Much cheaper to do it right now than to suffer a 'Ground Hog Day' experience later.
