TD5 synth or semi synth oil?

A couple of mechanics recently said that they only use fully synthetic in a TD5 (such as valvoline synpower?). I've been using Valvoline Engine Armour Diesel 5W40 (as semi synthetic) with no issues in the last 20 months or so. I change to oil every 5000k, tow occasionally, and use the car as a kids taxi and work commuter. Sometimes it even goes off road!

I did try Penrite fully synthetic enviro + 5w40 a while ago, and whilst on a snow driving holiday in Tasmania this year, I checked my dipstick one day and it was empty - not too keen on going back to that one!

Most of the info that I'm getting from forums, websites, etc is to use Penrite HPR Diesel 5 - a semi synthetic.

Sorry, I don't mean to bring up a subject that has been flogged to death, but if I am asking this question, then so is someone else.

If the engine armour has been fine for me so far should I stay with that or is there a benefit in trying something else. I'm planning on having this car for the long haul.

I’ve used semi-synth Penrite HPR Diesel 5W40 ( Penrite Oil | HPR DIESEL 5 5W-40 (Semi Syn.) )for the last 110,000Km (Currenly have 280,000Km in the clock).

I’ve had no issues with oil usage between my 10,000Km oil & filters (Both Engine filters) changes. When I took the sump off after running it for 90,000Km it was spotless, no sludge or buildup.

TD5 synth or semi synth oil?

    I’ve used semi-synth Penrite HPR Diesel 5W40
No worries for 50k kms. Like you, I had a look on a bunch of forums (including this one-check out “the good oil”). It is also the oil that the supercheap computer recommended.

I use fully synthetic and do 10k changes. No dramas in 10 years. Brand changes depending on what's in stock. Nulon 5w40 at the moment. Seems good. I always change both oil filters every 10k too.

FWIW - 5K oil changes are a waste of good oil with the td5. The filtration system is top notch.

From the research I've done it seems semi-synthetic is generally the way to go but full certainly wouldn't harm the engine either - Note that Land Rover recommend semi-synthetic.......I went with Penrite HPR 5 Diesel 5w-40 in my TD5.

Sometimes reading too many forums is bad!

I was just going from RAVE. 10000km but 5000k if lots of low km trips. Unless I've totally misread things

Well gents, looks like Penrite HPR Diesel 5 is the new Oil of choice for my TD5!

Still curious why a couple of mechanics say only fully synthetic.

Is it worth doing an engine flush next oil change?

Good choice on the Penrite I'd say but DON'T do an engine flush, never do an engine flush as it doesn't really help much and is much more likely to create problems!! Just make sure you get the engine nice and warm before dropping the oil and thats more tan good enough..... As for how many K's between change, I know that it was once claimed that every 20,000km for an oil change due to the trick 2x oil setup the td5 runs but I'd not be going that long, having said that I'd also have to say that 5,000km is just silly unless that 5,000km was heavy off-roading and abuse..... 10,000km with out any flush or the like and replacement of BOTH oil filters is just about right for this engine in my opinion..

Unsure why they'd say 'only' fully synthetic......that would be right on high performance petrol engines etc.. but land rover built this engine and semi is what they put in it so thats always a better place to start.
