It'd be noisy, wreck the fuel economy and look like crap; apart from that, great idea.![]()
I know that Discos are much more car like than the old SI and IIs that had tropical roofs but.
The roofs of Discos and lots of them, have the dreaded clear coat wear out and it does look terrible. I was wondering about killing two birds with one stone. Rather than the cost of repainting (around a $1,000) making up some 25mm square tubing risers and covering that with aluminium sheet making it a tropical roof.
I have it all planned out in my head, rivnuts set into the roof, rubber seal under the risers, cutouts to ensure sealing around rivnuts, holes through the sheet where the roof mount bolts go with rubber sealing grommets in them.
What does anybody think, work OK or look like ****?
Look forward to some chatter on this or pictures if someone has already done it.
Cheers
Mike

If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
If you start modding the roof just to hide the peeling paint and it doesn't work out (eg. looks crap, is noisy etc), you could create more problems for yourself later (eg. rust). It would probably be easier to put on a full length contoured roof rack as the paint still gets hidden, you get useful storage space and it is still saleable later on.
It's a great idea, but might not be entirely feasible to get that factory look without an actual second roof on top. Having said that, about 3-4 years ago I went to Karijini in January and my sleeping arrangements due to flies and mosquito's was putting my bedding in the back of the D1. Daytime temps were hovering between 45C to 50C and the car wasn't cool enough to sleep in until after midnight as it was so heat soaked. Trust me, on that trip I would have done anything to have had a safari roof!![]()
I didn't think it would be any noisier that a roof rack, quieter in fact because it wouldn't have the cross bars.
It was more the appearance side that might bug me and I'm sure I could handle the rust side with sealing but?
Thanks for the replies guys, I'll have to think more about it.
Cheers

If your clear coat is not flaked but just milky, then you can repaint the roof using spray cans yourself.
My Oslo blue car had a milky roof and I resprayed it using Supercheap primer , silver lacquer and clear coat. The total cost was about 100_150 AFAIR.
Mine turned out a bit crap because this incredible hot change came in while I was spraying and the silver tended to dry in streaks as the paint was drying before hitting the surface, however it still looks pretty good and nobody ever sees the top anyway unless they are looking out of a first story window.
The difference in surface temperature is astounding on a hot day. I reckon it is about 15-20C. I also have added Chrome exterior wrapping to the skylight windows.

I have the same problem with my bonnet and roof where the clear coat has gone yucky.
I wonder if I gave it a respray with clear coat it would make the white bits clear again?

How tall are you? I'm pretty sure I can't see the roof of my Disco unless I climb up.
Are you worried about what your neighbours will say? Do you live in a neighbourhood of tall judgy people?
I am Not that worried about the crappy finish as it doesn't affect the performance of the truck at all But my bonnet is pretty Ugly and an easy and cost effective "Fix" would be "Nice" and it is desirable.
If I have to spend Hundreds if not thousands to make this go away then it just isn't going to happen as I would much rather spend that money on fuel on a trip or two up to the Kimberlies.
I have already spent several thousand on replacing/repairing many parts of my D2a that IMHO is a result of the previous owners disregard for maintenance and the paint is yet another symptom of this neglect But it has always been on the bottom of my list as far as priorities go.
So if anyone has a K.I.S.S method and a low cost way of fixing this it would be a "Doable" option, Otherwise then Bugger it![]()
