    Disco start Issue

G’day all, I recently bought a HSE 2002 Disco. I’m having an issue with starting her. I went to start it yesterday and nothing, just a click like a flat battery.

Charged the battery (its brand new) but still nothing. Every time I turn the ignition on all the symbols light up on the dash and then go out, except the oil, battery and engine light. I then turn the key and only a click and sometimes no click and the radio and clock go off.

It was starting fine after the new battery was put in 5 days ago, until yesterday when I went to move it. I have a reinspection for the roadworthy this week after replacing the brake pedal rubber and blinker lense. So I’m keen to make sure it runs when he comes back.

double check the tightness of the battery terminals, also check for a firm connection to the starter ( all terminals)

Does it start when you give the starter a friendly whack with a broomstick handle?

    Might need one of these:

Check ALL your earth's, The main ones from the battery and at the front of the fuse box in the engine bay.
Also make sure that the terminals on the battery are clean and the battery clamps are good and tight.
From what you are describing it looks to me like you have a "Dodgy" connection somewhere.

If you have a friend to help.
Next time it does this click/no click issue, check the battery leads(2 of) coming off the +ve battery connector.

They look like a pretty weak design(both V8 and TD5) and a little wriggle of the wires may make a difference.
If it does, new terminals should get it going properly.
Both my V8 and my brothers TD5 had this issue. I suppose after 15-20 years they wear a little.

A little WD40 type stuff(or contact cleaner) on the major power and earthing points is about the easiest test you can start with.

    Main earth

The earth wire not only bolts to the body it keeps going and bolts to the engine block via the tensioner bracket.

Ensure this is tight, I left mine slightly loose when doing some work and had the same type of problem.

    Regards

    Mike
