D2 TD5 filler neck slow to fill.

I'm wondering if the D2 TD5 has any specific issue with it's fill rate(that is filling up with diesel from a standard pump).

Brother's D2 has an annoying issue with filling up.
You can barely get a couple of litres of diesel in at a time at the slowest pump rate before it clicks off.
Feels like a venting/breather issue, so I pulled the larger breather pipe(with the clamp fittings) off it's connection at the plastic filler neck, blew(by mouth) through to feel if it's free flowing and it feels fine.
That is, not much effort to blow through it and air can be heard flowing into the tank and out the filler neck, doesn't feel blocked in any way.

The smaller vent pipe that feeds back to the other side of the plastic filler neck also feels fine(free flowing) back to the tank.

Just for now(this one fill) we disconnected the smaller vent pipe which (apparently)has some filtery thing at the top of the plastic end of the system .. expecting some fuel to seep out of it whilst filling... but nothing!
Still the same issue .. 20sec fuel in before it clicks off at the slowest possible fill rate.

I noted a while back that Mobil fuel foams up much less than BP when I fill up my D1(300 Tdi), so I've switched to Mobil diesel when I can.
I used to use BP, but it foams up way too much for my liking and my last 20 litres takes forever to fill.
With Mobil now I only have issues for the last 5 litres.. but that's not an issue for me.

ps. BP consumer grade diesel(Ultimate) is different to their truck diesel.
Mate works for a fuel transport mob and he fills them up with either ultimate diesel(the foamy stuff) or std diesel for trucks.
At work we use std BP which barely foams back at all on the typical huge truck filler necks

So we tried Mobil for my brothers TD5 as a test(as it foams up a lot less) and still the same filling trouble.

Curious if anyone has/had this issue and sorted something .. or is it just a design problem and that's how all diesel D2's are.
Tank doesn't appear to be over pressurised any more than any other that I've recently filled(my D1, 307Pug, etc) and even if it were over pressurised, releasing the cap would then release that pressure and the tank would then be at atmospheric pressure .. so easy to fill.
I'm thinking maybe there's some internal obstruction in the large filler hose at the tank end .. if anyone has ever had to deal with such an issue.
    Arthur.

There is a something wrong for sure, as both mine get filled from a fast fill pump and never a problem.

Maybe someone has cured this problem.

Take the big hose off the tank and look for something like a broken fuel cap or a damaged tank neck insert that's restricting the flow. Filler nozzles tend to stop filling when the tip is immersed in standing fuel.

I thought they all did it. I remember when the D2 came out everybody commenting that it takes as long to get the last 10 litres in as it does the rest.

Mine appears to have a kinked small hose by looking at it from underneath, but.

I can fill mine at full speed (STD flow pump) until the last few litres where it gurgles so if I slow down I can fill the tank up.

I agree, there must be something in the big hose. :-)

Yeah, if it were only the last 10 litres, you kind'a expect it.
That's why I fill with Mobil now in my D1, last 5-10lt(usually 5lt tho) take time.

But on brothers D2, even from close to empty(eg. a total 70-80lt fill) it does the click off from the start.
So to fill it with 70+ litres takes about 20+ mins.

Going from the comments so far it's more than likely an obstruction of some kind in the large filler neck hose, or inlet port at the tank.
Something like a inwardly bent filler port at the tank where the filler neck hose connects. Could be causing turbulence or something, creating foaming of the fuel.

May even get bro to drive to empty the tank as much as possible, and remove tank, try to clean it of any possible sludge and then check the tank and hoses whilst out of the car.
We changed the fuel pump a few weeks back now and tank looked clean inside but that was really only a cursory check.
Doesn't look like a lot of space to remove the hose clamp at the tank end(between the chassis and body).

    Thanks for the replies folks.

It's possible that the filler neck's vent pipe to be clogged or choked, pointed with red arrow

    Vent hose

Check the small vent hose where it is looped at the factory...

My td5 used to be slow to fill and I thought was the norm after reading up on it. After putting a new fuel pump in, it suddenly went noisy after a couple of weeks. Roverlord suggested checking breather hose first and I discovered the breather hose had kinked where it is looped around on itself by the factory. I made up a replacement breather and (i) the fuel pump shut up and (ii) I can now fill as fast as I like, literally all the way to full.
    Cheers, Charles

I have similar issues but only with the last 10lts too.

I got a 10lt jerry can with the yellow tube type neck and pushed it in the hole and turned the jerry can upside down. It didn't have the same issue and there was no suction on the jerry can so it was going as fast as gravity would allow.

If you have an obstruction you may be able to try this method of filling to check it out, surely if it is obstructed it will overflow even with a jerry can.
