Air Con Gas

With most modern vehicles i presume the pollen filter keeps the evap coil clean.

I don't think the D2 had one,although it did have a foam filter over the fresh air intake grill.

To follow on what Rick has said,the dirtier an evaporater is,the more likely it will corrode,but there are two different issues.

Dirt on the evap will cause the fins to corrode,and then there is no efficiency as the fins come away from the evaporater tubes.This also causes air flow to drop off,as the corrosion and corroded fins will block airflow.

The other type of corrosion is pin holes in the evaporater tubes,which cause refrigerant leaks.This is usually caused by a corrosive environment,or poor quality tube materials.

Food acid is the killer of cold room evaporater coils,as it reacts with the copper tubes,and causes pin holes.

Auto air evaporaters are aluminium,so anything that reacts with aluminium will affect them.

Some evaporaters have a corrosion protection coating to reduce the chance of this happening.

Sewerage plants are very good at reducing air conditioning copper evaporaters with aluminium fins into a corroded mess in a very short time,due to acids in the air.

I think the OP asked how much the regas was going to cost. (It cost $120.00)
I took mine to Hunter & Cutthill in Geelong and they drained it refilled it with both the gas and the correct amount of oil,
They had a read out that told me how much gas was supposed to be in there and that I had less than half that. It has been about six years since it was gassed
It took about an hour and they did it whilst I waited as I live out of town.

It works fantastically and seeing there is only 220CC in there, you would be unlucky for it to burn.

Seems a losing argument about catching fire considering the D3s High pressure fuel pump blow ups and the flammability of coolant.

I would like to see some evidence of numbers of aircons exploding in real life vs fires from fuel and coolant , batteries in Rangers and DPFs in Rangers etc.
Also all domestic fridges now use LPG based gas and you don't hear of many house fires vs unattended heaters etc..

Can you use LPG as a drop in gas for a R134 system? Does it work the same as 134 and is it compatible with the compressor oil?
I have history in building portable aircon in a previous life...

My job (in part) is a supplier to the HVAC trades.
So if a non trade licensed person came into my work asking for a restricted product, I'd politely tell them to produce their RHL or nick off. People bypassing the correct refrigerant supply channels will often find their products impounded at customs. So this creates a further element of risk for the uninitiated.

My point of view- support your local fridgy, get it done properly. If you can't afford the gas and service price, then there is also the redneck aircon that most of us defender drivers have [bigwhistle]

In the UK you can still mess about with your own aircon (so far as I know) but if you are caught venting the gas into the atmosphere you will be given a big fine!
My MOT man told me last year that the Department of Transport sometimes send cars in for an MOT disguised as a member of the public, and ask for the aircon to be topped up knowing full well that it has a leak.
The technician is supposed to recover the gas, then inject dye and find the leak using nitrogen. Then either fix the leak or leave it empty and inform the customer.
If they just top it up they get a big fine as they have knowingly released gas into the atmosphere.
He also said that they are changing to another less harmful gas which is BLOODY EXPENSIVE!!!

UK has a limit on how much refrigerant (as a country) it can import in a year.
He says it is so expensive that Mercedes now fit all of their cars with the hardware but won't charge the system unless you pay. It's four figures to fill it and it takes less gas than an equivalent 134a system would.

I had a feeling the very latest automotive refrigerant was flammable like LPG?

House fires caused by white goods in UK are on the up.
I don't think any domestic fridges here are filled with LPG though. Caravan fridges yes, house no.
Incidentally, are you aware that the initial cause of the Grenfell apartment building fire was caused by a fridge lighting itself up?
That killed around 75 people...
