    Spares kit TD5

Getting ready to set off on 10 month trip around Aus and it's time to get the spares kit together.

Aside from tools and tyre repair gear, keen to hear what others would consider essential.

    Spare air and fuel filter
    Belts
Hoses , which ones or is it better to carry more of the silicone tape to fix a hose to limp to somewhere we can set up for a few days and mail order a part in?
    Assortment of tapes
    Fuses & basic elec kit
    Rear rubber coupling?
Essential fluids - coolant, atf & oil top up bottles ?
Spare shocks & second spare rim/tyre ? I've got serviceable old set, but the weight is becoming an issue.
Other essential parts that are known to give "show stopping" trouble?

    Keen to get some ideas.

    Cheers

Spare air and fuel filter. √
    Belts. √
Hoses , which ones or is it better to carry more of the silicone tape to fix a hose to limp to somewhere we can set up for a few days and mail order a part in? Should have all new hoses fitted but if not , genuine top hose , oil cooler hose and three way hose , others can be cobbled together from other makes temporarily.
Assortment of tapes. Compressed digital music is the go these days
Fuses & basic elec kit. √
Rear rubber coupling? If yours is recent or new don't bother , if not , fit new one
Essential fluids - coolant, atf & oil top up bottles ? Plain water will get you out of trouble , atf , maybe a couple of litres (are your trans flex lines new .... No , then also take a metre of 13 mm trans cooler hose and hose clamps ( good ones ) to get out of trouble
Spare shocks & second spare rim/tyre ? I've got serviceable old set, but the weight is becoming an issue. Not necessary , take a puncture kit and if you're doing lots of remote you can take a second tyre but only worth it if you can fit it, better to travel with common tyre sizes , that way someone will have one
Other essential parts that are known to give "show stopping" trouble? Not if the common ones have been replaced with quality parts by someone competent.

    Keen to get some ideas.

    Cheers

Have a great trip, a full service and inspection by a specialist is essential
PS I wanted to give answers in a different colour or font but it kept stopping my browser for some reason

Couple of show stoppers I would attend to before leaving would be the infamous oil pump bolt and the harmonic balancer. Disregard if already done, but, with the oil pump bolt, don't assume; If you don't know, get it done. Also check the injector harness.

Agree with whitey, get a nanocom and enjoy. Agree about a full service at a specialist.

    Ditto all the above.

If you have any doubt about anything like hoses/belts change before you leave.
If it's an auto check the cooling line swage joints and also the welded/brazed joints on the ATF cooler - if either of these go a couple of liters of ATF wont be enough.

    Enjoy the ride!

My suggestion would be to replace all the rubber hoses and belts before you go and keep the old ones as spares (or carry silicone tape) even if they look okay.

With regard to carrying spare fluids, are you going to be going anywhere so remote that you can't pop to a servo to get what you need? If you keep an eye on things and top them up before a warning light comes on it saves carrying unnecessary weight from the start. And, if you do find yourself in a situation where you suddenly need to replace all the oil or trans fluid in one hit there's probably something wrong that you can't fix with carried spares anyway.

Again, depending on where you're going and how remote you're going to be etc, maybe consider replacing your fuel pump before you go depending on the age of the one in your car now. A crank angle sensor failing could be a show stopper but they are quite small and carried easily so get one of them. A Nanocom is useful but so is a Haynes manual or a RAVE CD.

Before you go get a thorough inspection done and do check the simple things like your air con drains to prevent water getting into the XYZ switch etc.

    Enjoy your trip!

    Thanks for the input guys.
Rubber coupling is only 10k old, as are all the belts and hoses & oil pump bolt job, as I've done a lot to her In prep over the last 12 months. The auto has had an extra cooler, custom serviceable lines, temp gauge, abt to get a new torque converter and another atf and filter done. I'm as happy as I'll ever be with the ZF I think!

Nanocom or Hawkeye is on the wish list...still deciding on that one which way to go.

Fluids- yeah really water will get me out of a bind i pop a coolant hose - have onboard tanks on the disco and the van for that. ATF is the only one that I think I'll carry for emergencies .... plus the pump bottle.

Harmonic balance is was also done 10k ago with engine mounts as we chased down a vibration issue.

Will be spending more time under it over the coming weeks installing reversing camera and some extra power outlets plus I've got brakes and converter and transfer case fix happening next week, so touch wood we will be in a pretty good position to go.

Fuel pump and CAS .... neither have been problematic, the pump is 80k old, sounds as healthy as always. I've got off-road recovery with Club 4x4 so my thoughts on a couple of the more specific parts is to camp up where I stop or get towed to a caravan park somewhere and get parts sent in. I'll give it some more thought though.
XYZ - my ac drains have dripped onto it and the flex joint of the exhaust for 220k now, prob should look at that.

You probably know this, but it's worth mentioning; If you were to get towed, remember to put the T/C in neutral to protect the auto.

No need to carry coolant, carry more water instead.

Engine oil of higher viscosity than you usually use and a 1 litre bottle of that super-thick Lucas Oil. You can mix the two to make a diff/transfer box oil.

4L of ATF if auto. Reckon you should notice problem before you lose more than that.

Metal putty/chem weld, small tube of gasket maker.

Diff pinion seal and axle seals.

I carry spare fuel pump (just the pump itself, not the whole assy) and crank sensor.

    12V test light.

A few paper clips or bobby pins to bridge relays, broken fuse bays etc

Consider replacing starter motor if auto.

    Extra booze.
