I've used the ratchet type for years no issues.
The weight of the car locks the ratchet mech closed, so ideas of bumping the lever and getting crushed are false.

My biggest gripe with mine are the stepwise height adjustment, a great set of stands would have a threaded section for infinitely adjustable height adjustment.

Would make some out of an old scaffold jack or similar if I were super keen. Over-engineer the heck out of it and it would easy take the 2T of a disco or deefer.

From experience ... ratchet is better!

I recently ordered a pair of folding axle stands. Handy to throw in the back for that trip. The rigid ones are too bulky to stow, and so a tyre change out bush gets done without the security of an axle stand

Sealey AS2000F Axle Stands (Pair) 2tonne Capacity per Stand - Folding Type | eBay I got the same as these, but pink, and a lot better price

I have these but in 5 tonne from hare and forbes, If I'm going to work under a 2.5 tonne vehicle my life and safety is valued more than a elcheapo $40 inc delivery stand.

I have some oldies with an ACME thread that are probably older than me!

Having an infinite adjustment is really nice.
That's all I've used under all my vehicles since I've had a licence.

Also have a new set that I haven't even unpacked yet, they are stupidly heavy duty but can't recall if they are ratchet or pin and they went in a removalists truck yesterday

Buy a pine sleeper and cut it small blocks just larger than the stand bases for extra height.
If you have a fat gut like mine that is.

Alternatively you could simply use a block of wood instead of the stands, If you are in need when out in the sticks you can make the blocks using a chainsaw to cut some logs to use
