    Preparing a disco to travel.

    Hello Land Rover world!!

    2001 TD5 Disco, 198000, manual.

We headhunted this vehicle to provide us safe passage, whilst we travel Australia..

What upgrades, extras and, most importantly, spares and repairs (preemptive) can the LR community suggest?

Today I am replacing the FPR.

All work will be carried out by me and I will contribute some helpful information in the future.

We will be leaving January 2019.

    Thank you

    Hello Hunt Family,

My wife and I are currently 31 days into our year long adventure. Hope to put together a run down of mods etc for Gary our disco while we are on the Spirit of Tasmania on Monday.

First thing to do is go to the group buy nanocom thread and see if the list is close to 12 or get onto it. Nanocom is super useful.

Also read as much of the good oil subforum as you can.

This community is super helpful and friendly. Welcome!

A bullbar would be the first thing I would put on it if not already have one, and a set of headlight protectors. If your plans are to be driving on gravel roads alot a snorkle is handy to keep the dust out of the air cleaner. An air compressor and a tyre gauge, and a basic recovery bag wth snatch strap and a couple of rated D shackles. Off course fit proper recovery points.

The truck is 16 years old so if you want 100% reliability get it thorely checked over by a LR specialist before you go and get ALL the problems found rectified.
Instead of carrying a new set of hoses and water pump as spares fit them and carry the old ones as spares.
Fit a good set of All Terrain tyres and spare.
Overheating is probably one of the most common problems encountered when touring so make sure your radiator is 100% good to go.
My last bit of advice is to make sure you enjoy the trip otherwise all the preparation will be in vain

as above but along with everything else, get your ball joints checked / changed before you leave and leave the separator at home, it's not strong enough to do these vehicles anyway ,make sure you fit a quality egt gauge , especially with a chip and towing

A low coolant alarm is absolutely essential.

Suspension and tyres, cooling system is important, very thorough general servicing and tuneup, maybe also get the transmission serviced, air-con service.
All fluids and belts should be replaced. Fit new parts and carry the old ones as spares.
Bullbar, luggage barrier, lights - + 130 bulbs in the headlights plus a lightbar with wiring loom. Put the lightbar on the bulbar so it can be used with the high beam (the ones on roof racks are probably illegal for the road).
Batteries - if they're more than two years old, replace them.
Does it leak? Seal the leaks.
Get the chassis steam-cleaned and sprayed with a rust converter/sealer.
Sure there are many other things.

Lots of good suggestions have been made, especially those centering on the engine cooling system and a coolant alarm. Don't forget to at least check the operation of the cooling fan viscous hub or perhaps for the few dollars involved simply replace it.

Enjoy your preps and then the trip.
