The job is done ......

I used some acetate sheet to cover the inlet port openings and to catch the little amount of drill and thread tap swarf that managed to fall through - thanks all for the helpfull input.

PS seeing all the old EGR goop that was inside the manifold it was hard to ignore it when it came time to close up on completion of the main job so i made a plan to remove the manifold and clean it when i do the intercooler. A Provent is now on my to do list as well.
