TD5 stock exhaust bellows flex joint

    What is it like internally?
Does it have an internal sleeve to smooth flow?

Mine didn't. My 99 D2 had a small diameter bellows and my 03 D2 had a considerably larger dia bellows. I eventually replaced the 03's with a non-LR version when it broke and rattled and the non-LR one was larger again as the bellows are quite restrictive.

Edit. Actually my 99 had a mesh style flexible joint but it was very restrictive.

My 2003 is corrugated on the inside and outside. There is an internal 'step down' just before the flex joint, which I assume is to direct the exhaust gasses away from the corrugations.

Photo shows the 'step' looking down the pipe from the turbo.

So they're not that flash internally.

I wonder what the Terrafirma TF562 is like inside?

    Thanks Graeme.

I want to de-cat the engine/dump pipe and ceramic coat it.
Just wondering if it might be easier to get another, (or one made) then if there's ever an issue at rego time i can refit the original.

[edit] Hmm, just reading the emission requirements and Australia never adopted Euro 3 for light diesels, and Euro 4 was adopted in '06.
Technically, does that make removing the cat illegal ?

Do Euro 2 vehicles have a cat to get the emissions below a certain level? If Euro 2 vehicles did not need a cat to meet emissions, then I guess removing the cat will be legal.

    Hi Rick,
I've got a Terrafirma and it have a mesh type flex joint, I did look down the pipe when I installed and can't remember any restriction.
I did however need to relocate the hanger as it was not right, cut the one of the original exhaust and welded it on and all good.
If I was changing again I'd get the original exhaust cat cut out and pipe welded in.

One local exhaust guy (who's known as a bit of a stickler for the rules), told me that if it (a cat) was fitted from the factory, then it can't be removed, and must be replaced.

My personal preference would be to delete it, using a piece that can be swapped out if necessary.

Early d2 had the stainless mesh type , no cat or restriction
Later metal bellows with restriction down to 42 mm
Would be worth checking wreckers around your area for the old type even if you have to replace the flex , seeing you want to ceramic coat it . if you get an eBay flex , the 5 inch long ones are about right in that they still leave enough room between sump / chassis, and enough room to change the oil filter
