Am I getting close ?
I can't see well but if one of them is black with light green trace wire they should just hang there cos it's for the transfer box temperature sensor which was fitted only on V8's especilly NAS, there must be two same type connectors one with black/blue trace wire connected to the diff lock switch, unplug them and if the bongs are off it means that you need a new switch(pointed with blue in the pic), if no joy with the wires unplugged then it's a wiring issue .... also make sure that fuse F25 interior fusebox is not loosened or blown

Am I getting close ?
Not close or i can't see the relevant part, the wiring for the diff-lock switch is with spade connectors as it was already explained and shown on the picture, on the top of the box close to the spigot

fixed !! Realised all that wiring should have been on the metal, clips, no idea why they were off when back on, looked for black and blue and could see a small glimmer of copper colour, obviously must have been rubbing together. So bit of insulation tape put everything back where should be,no pinging. Hooray hooray.thanks for help yet again all, especially Sierrafery, happy days.
Just some added info after the fact... (which I'm pretty sure is here on AULRO if searched).
*Discovery 2 facelifted (D2a) uses two difflock switches.
*D2a difflock switches are wired in parallel.
*D2a uses a later style of switch (see picture below).
*You gain easier access from underneath as the removable centre console is riveted.
