Tablet as GPS

We use the 3M product DuoLock to hold various devices in place on dashboards etc and in the Safety Helicopter used in Rally Australia. It is best described as a super Velcro and when finished, the adhesive does not remove paint or leave any marks on the vehicle's dash. Not cheap but I bought a roll which will last me and my colleagues a lifetime.

Arkon articulated seat-base mount tablet holder (egay ~$140).

Has held up to all kinds of terrain. Money well spent.

Samsung Galaxy 2 tablet ($220 5 years ago) running Memory Maps (Hema touring + included free Aus 250k topos).

Requires constant charge when in use, otherwise will drain battery in 3-4 hours.

Hema maps ~$150 licenced for 2 PCs and 2 mobile devices.

Both map sets ok but ideally would have state 100k topos to compliment (~$150 per state).

Was running Androzic (Hema touring and NSW + VIC 100k topos) but had a few bugs and getting maps too much effort for me.

Generally navigate with tablet, books, nat park info sheets etc

It is possible to mount RAM's 1" ball Mount to a D4 dash with out to much damage. The ball base needs to be filed back on one side but it then fits nicely on the shelf above the top glovebox and behind the opening handle. I run a OziExplorer on a

Windows 10 slate mounted on a RAM Tough Tray with another ball mount on the back. An adjustable RAM arm joins the 2 balls and give plenty of flexibility and is easily removed. To uninstall the dash mount is 3 screws and then hide the holes with plugs or a piece of dash mat or

And one from left field which I know works well in a D2.
Take out the flow louvres from one of the a/c vents either side of the radio, and at the bottom screw or rivet in a piece of flat steel with the protruding bit shaped to suit whatever you are going to mount. Needs to be relatively thin so you can reinstall the louvres.
Protrusion is not the best in a crash situation, but ....
I have one made up somewhere if I can remember where I stored it.

I just run my HX7 in its original suction mount which is what I use 99% of the time and I sometimes run my laptop with ozie explorer/hema explorer with all the maps on it using a USB "Dongle" and sit that on the passenger seat.
The big screen on the laptop is great for looking for details and vague tracks also I load up waypoints on it instead of the HX7 unit and it comes in handy when the weathers is crap for fishing to watch movies on [thumbsupbig].
If I can find a mount that will take the weight of the laptop it would be very handy [biggrin]

For a D1/D2 type dash, I (sort of) calculated that the rubber strip location in the centre of the dash can be a perfect location for a screwed mount on the dash top.
You cut out an opening on the rubber mat to allow access to a RAM 1" ball mounting(like Lloyds D4 mount setup).
You'd then need to use the short RAM arm for the tablet holder, otherwise it'd protrude too far out past the dash fasica level.
I prefer to have mine mounted just behind the front face of the fascia, as it allows my to rest my palm and operate the touchscreen with more accuracy on bumpy roads(eg. zooming, changing Ozi pages, or setting it to use specific maps type operations)
The dash material is too soft for a rigid mounting, but it would only need some decently sized washers or a captive nut setup from the underside to make it rigid.
Have thoughts to do such a mod myself, but my current setup is pretty much ideal as it is now anyhow .. so there's little enthusiasm on my part to look into it closer.
If you want to remove the setup, all you need is a new rubber mat and it gets the dash to 'as new' condition again.
My interest in doing such a mod over the suction cup setup at the moment is that it'd make cleaning the front screen less of an annoyance, having to remove the suction cup(not the annoyance, as this part is easy), but the annoyance of having to adjust the location and orientation of the tablet mount this way and that way to get it to the perfect spot to remove all possible reflections on the screen again.
(I'm, a smoker, so my screen gets gunked up regularly .. and I can't be stuffed doing things I should do sometimes)
